Book Description
The interdisciplinary field of molecular systems biology aims to understand the behavior and mechanisms of biological processes composed of individual molecular components. As we gain more qualitative and quantitative information of complex intracellular processes, biochemical modeling and simulation become indispensable not only to uncover the molecular mechanisms of the processes, but to perform useful predictions. To this end, the E‐Cell System, a multi‐algorithm, multi‐timescale object‐oriented simulation platform, can be used to construct predictive virtual biological systems. Gene regulatory and biochemical networks that constitute a sub‐ or a whole cellular system can be constructed using the E‐Cell System to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses. The purpose of E‐Cell System: Basic Concepts and Applications is to provide a comprehensive guide for the E‐Cell System version 3 in terms of the software features and its usage. While the publicly available E‐Cell Simulation Environment version 3 User's Manual provides the technical details of model building and scripting, it does not describe some of the underlying concepts of the E‐Cell System. The first part of the book addresses this issue by providing the basic concepts of modeling and simulation with the E‐Cell System.

Our Livable World
Author: Marc Schaus
Publisher: Diversion Books
ISBN: 1635767210
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
A vital guide to the frontlines of our fight against climate change and the scientific and technological innovations that will revolutionize the world. The United States’ accelerated plans to combat the existential threat of climate change finally give reason to hope. In Our Livable World, research specialist and author Marc Schaus explores the incredible new green innovations in science and engineering that can allow us to avoid the worst repercussions of global warming as we work to usher in a sustainable, livable world. To beat a challenge the size of climate change, our solutions will have to be ambitious: solar thermal cells capable of storing energy long after the sun goes down, “smart highways” designed to charge your vehicle as you drive, indoor vertical farms automated to maximize crop growth with no pesticides, bioluminescent vines ready to one day replace our streetlights, jet fuel created from landfill trash—and next-generation carbon capture techniques to remove the emissions we have already released over the past several decades. Far from the geoengineering schemes of cli-fi action thrillers, real solutions are being developed, right this moment. Our Livable World features interviews with the innovators, real talk on the revolutionary technology, and a clear picture of a cleaner planet in the future. “An important book that shows the dawn of a new kind of environmental movement―an age where we invest in deeply creative and fascinating technical solutions that work in harmony with the Earth. Marc Schaus lays out the exciting future of environmental innovation before us.” —Katie Patrick, author of How to Save the World

7 Seconds to Die
Author: John F. Antal
Publisher: Casemate
ISBN: 1636241247
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 197
Book Description
A military study of the 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan—the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems. Fought over the course of forty-four days, the Second Nagorno-Karabakh war resulted in a decisive military victory for Azerbaijan. Armenia lost even though they controlled the high ground in a mountainous region that favored traditional defense. In 7 Seconds to Die, military consultant and historian John Antal examines the decisive factors of the war and their implications for the future of armed conflict. The fact that Azerbaijan won the war is not extraordinary, considering the correlation of forces arrayed against Armenia. What is exceptional is that this was the first modern war primarily decided by unmanned weapons. The Turkish-made BAYRAKTAR TB2 Unmanned Air Combat Vehicle (UCAV) and the Israeli-made HAROP Loitering Munition (LM) dominated the fighting and provided Azerbaijan with a war-winning advantage.

Power and the Powers
Author: Andrew R. Hardy
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498273572
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 185
Book Description
Missio Dei by its very nature requires the church to come to terms with the exercise of power, both internally and externally, as it confronts the world. Tune in to any newscast or glance at the daily newspaper and it immediately becomes clear that the use and abuse of power is a live issue. The more we focus on the twists and turns of current events, the more it appears that uncorrupted exercise of power eludes the human race. All too often we become uneasily aware that there are powers lying behind the power that any of us wields, whether it is in the family, the classroom, on the shop floor, in the boardroom, or in churches. Effective missional leadership involves creative engagement with the powers at work in the world without being debased by them. This book sets out to address the issue of the use and misuse of power from biblical, theological, and practical perspectives. The authors bring their theological, pastoral, missionary, and personal experience to their task in order to inform, challenge, and invite readers into a responsible use of the powers that God has put into the hands of each one of us to achieve his purposes in the world.
