By examining the current wastewater treatment process of increasing pH to enhance settling of particles via hydroxide precipitation, a mercury recovery system can be developed to get better mercury recovery throughout the system. To improve solids settling, the addition of ferric chloride was examined as a flocculent aid and the addition of sodium sulfide was examined as a sulfide precipitation alternative to hydroxide precipitation. The results obtained from bench-scale testing using the parameters of control, ferric chloride addition, sodium sulfide addition, and the addition of both ferric chloride and sodium sulfide suggest that optimal mercury recovery in the treated sludge and negligible mercury recovery in the treated wastewater is best achieved using the addition of ferric chloride alone. A conceptual design with order of magnitude cost estimate is included for the automatic chemical addition of both sodium hydroxide and ferric chloride.
