Captain John N.W. Rumple was born near Fostoria, Ohio, in 1841. The family migrated to Iowa in 1853 and settled on a farm. He served with the Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War and was promoted from private to captain. He married Adaline K. Whitling in 1866. They had a daughter. After the death of his first wife, he married Mary K. Shepard. They had a son, who died young. Captain Rumple died at Chicago in 1903.
