Melville Ezra Ingalls, president of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis railway, more popularly known as the "Big Four," was born at Harrison, Me., Sept. 6, 1842, his parents being Ezra T. and Louisa Ingalls, descendants of that old New England stock whose industry, patriotism and inherent love of honesty have been such potent factors in moulding the character of American institutions. His youth was passed on his father's farm, and in attendance upon the common schools during the winter months. At the age of sixteen he was granted a teacher's certificate and from that time until he reached his majority he was engaged in the onerous labor of the country schoolmaster or in attending higher institutions of learning. After graduating from Briton academy he entered Bowdoin college in 1860, but his finances running low he did not finish the course.
