A vast amount of research has been conducted on the underachievement of gifted and talented students and the strategies best used to improve achievement in these students. Yet a large number of highly able students are still failing to meet their expected potential because of a lack of challenging curriculum, or a lack of engagement and motivation. This project aims to provide a differentiated independent study for second grade students at an urban school in West Michigan. The goal of this project is to provide gifted students with activities that are at an appropriate level of challenge, as well as the freedom of choice within their learning in order to increase motivation and engagement. This independent study will allow students to choose their topic of learning, work at their own pace, and determine the way in which they are evaluated on their work. Student choice is coupled with a level of rigor appropriate for their readiness, to create an independent study that is tailored to individual student need.
