This book argues that the problem of gender identity is vital to the large corpus of medieval Hispanic texts that discuss the nature of women. What is a woman? This book questions the persistent assumption that the large corpus of medieval Hispanic texts that discuss the nature of women can be defined in terms of the clichéd discourses of misogynism and defence of women, arguing instead that the problem of gender identity is vital to them all. The texts, some well-known, others which have received scant critical attention, are each discussed in their specific contexts and in relation to theostensible reasons for their composition, such as a political, literary, religious, or didactic 'agenda'. They are also related to the literary traditions in which they are written [misogynistic denunciation, satire, humour, defence, narrative debate, among others], and the particular theoretical problems arising from them are discussed. But it is also argued that the full meaning of the texts lies at the less immediately accessible level at which they address this very problem of definition, one which arises directly from the self-perpetuating contradictions of authoritative wisdom on the nature of women. Memories of Colonisation in Medieval and Modern Castile: Rereading and Refashioning al-Andalus traces the evolving memory of a dominant al-Andalus in medieval Castilian and, later, modern Spanish literature, and its overlap with contemporary formations of collective identity, race, and nation. It presents a series of close readings of neomedievalist literary works that look back to the socioeconomic apogee of al-Andalus, the tenth-century Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba, from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century. These works rewrite what has become known as the story of the siete infantes de Lara, although it is their Andalusi half-brother, Mudarra, who takes centre stage from the early modern period on. In its earliest form, it is a story of a weak, conflictual county of Castile, dependent socioeconomically and morally upon Andalusi intervention. This book therefore traces how a story of Castilian weakness is repeatedly rewritten once the reverse colonial dynamic had taken hold and Castile had begun conquering al-Andalus. Memories of Colonisation asks why Mudarra and the infantes continue to reappear in medieval chronicles, from the Estoria de España to lesser-known regional historiography, early modern ballads, comedias, and nineteenth-century Romantic poetry and prose. By examining how each of these texts remember tenth century Iberia's fluid geographical and interracial boundaries, it explores how they support or challenge dominant contemporary discourses of collective identity, race, and nation; from the neogothic aspirations of thirteenth-century Castile to the antisemitism of fifteenth-century Toledo, expansion in the Mediterranean, the Islamophobia of the morisco expulsion, and the partisan manipulation of al-Andalus under nineteenth century liberalism. As the first study of the development of Spanish neomedievalism, it explores how this serves as a productive, prescient discourse of cultural memory through which chroniclers, poets, playwrights, and authors can look forward. It questions the inevitability of Christian-Castilian colonial hegemony by invoking a narrative of Christian Iberia's own subjugation by a superior Umayyad Caliphate. It also explores how each text exposes the task of reconstructing historical memory in the present and thereby challenges the notion of a stable, incontestable past for Castile and Spain.

Mester de clerecía is the term traditionally used to designate the first generations of learned poetry in medieval Ibero-Romance dialects (the precursors of modern Castilian and other Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula). Fortalitium fidei is one of the central texts in the controversy surrounding the religious and social status of conversos in fifteenth-century Castile. This monograph provides a close analysis of the text itself and contextualizes this study through comparison with pro-converso texts and with reference to Alonso de Espina's career as an Observant Franciscan. After an outline of the development of the converso problem, it offers a biography of Espina and a discussion of the context of production of Fortalitium fidei. There is then a discussion of three works of theology in defence of conversos: Alonso de Cartagena's Defensorium unitatis christianae, Juan de Torquemada's Tractatus contra madianitas et ismaelitas, and Alonso de Oropesa's Lumen ad revelationem gentium. The rest of the work is detailed reading of Fortalitium fidei, with chapters on the image of the fortress, the treatment of Jews and Judaism, and of conversos. This volume addresses the extent and nature of the debate about conversos, the development of models of genealogical exclusion, and the role of Espina and his text in the ending of religious plurality in Spain.

The first comprehensive study of medieval changelings and associated attitudes to the health and care of children in the period. The changeling - a monstrous creature swapped for a human child by malevolent powers - is an enduring image in the popular imagination; dubbing a child a changeling is traditionally understood as a way to justify the often-violent rejection of a disabled or ailing infant. Belief in the reality of changelings is famously attested in Stephen of Bourbon's disapproving thirteenth-century account of rites at the shrine of Saint Guinefort the Holy Greyhound, where sick children were brought to be cured. However, the focus on the St. Guinefort rituals has meant some scholarly neglect of the wealth of other sources of knowledge (including mystery plays and medical texts) and the nuances with which the changeling motif was used in this period. This interdisciplinary study considers the idea of the changeling as a cultural construct through an examination of a broad range of medical, miracle, and imaginative texts, as well as the lives of three more conventional Saints, Stephen, Bartholomew and Lawrence, who, in their infancy, were said to have been replaced by a demonic changeling. The author highlights how people from all walks of life were invested in both creating and experiencing the images, texts and artefacts depicting these changelings, and examines societal tensions regarding infants and children: their health, their care, and their position within the familial unit.
