Over the last forty years, the U.S. community college system has expanded, allowing disadvantaged groups greater access to higher education. With that expansion, a body of research has emerged examining community college students' educational outcomes. However, the research is limited in understanding the academic persistence of low-income students and community college student in particular. The purpose of this comparative, qualitative study is to explore some of the unanswered questions about how low income white and Latino students' experience academic persistence similarly and differently and understand how gender influences the challenges students may face during college. This study draws from interviews of 22 (11 White/11 Latino/a) low-income community college students at a rural, Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the West. All students share similar challenges because of their class constraints, but Latino/a students in particular face challenges of racism and discrimination that carried over into their college careers. Faculty and family are the key sources of support for all students, which mediate some of the challenges. Variation is seen between the experiences of males and females, as traditional gender roles are reinforced and maintained in the family. This study offers insights into how structural inequality creates barriers for students from their perspective and gives recommendations for practitioners on how to mediate some of these challenges and increase student persistence.

In recent years, educators have become increasingly concerned with students' attempts to manage their own learning and achievement efforts through activities that influence the instigation, direction and persistence of those efforts. In 1989, Zimmerman and Schunk edited the first book devoted to this topic. They assembled key theorists offering a range of perspectives on how students self-regulate their academic functioning. One purpose of that volume was to provide theoretical direction to ongoing as well as nascent efforts to explore academic self-regulatory processes. Since that date, there has been an exponential surge in research. This second volume on academic self-regulation offers the fruits of the first generation of research. It also addresses a number of key issues that have arisen since then such as how self-regulation differs from such related constructs as motivation and metacognition, and whether students can be taught self-regulatory skills. The contributors reveal an interesting, uplifting, and at times, disturbing picture of how students grapple with the day-to-day problems of achieving in circumstances with inherent limitations and obstacles. This volume provides insight into the source of students' capabilities to surmount adversities -- the origins of their self-initiated processes designed to improve learning, motivation, and achievement. The text is organized on the basis of a conceptual framework that analyzes academic self-regulation into four major dimensions. Recent research has emerged to show increased support for the notion that social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula in schools can improve upon a student’s academic achievement for a number of reasons, so long as the student is actively engaged. There has also been literature support for influence that student-teacher relationships have academic achievement. With these concepts considered, this study investigated the potential mediating effects that student-teacher relationship can have on SEL engagement and academic achievement for math and reading, respectively. Archival data were collected from two low-income, urban middle schools with an established SEL program in place to perform this mediation analysis. Results from the analyses of SEL engagement and academic achievement, student-teacher relationship and academic achievement, SEL engagement and student-teacher relationship, and direct and indirect effects of the mediator were not significant. The implications of these findings for future research and practice, as well as the studies strengths and weaknesses that may have contributed to these results, is discussed.

The current literature appears to have mixed results as to how ethnic identity (EI) impacts academic achievement. This study attempts to clarify EI's role by proposing it as a potential mediator for the relationship between academic self-efficacy (ASE) and academic achievement as measured by grade point average (GPA) and Math, Reading, and English/Language Arts Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs). School level socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnic composition are also analyzed in conjunction with the aforementioned variables to determine the degree to which they impact the potential mediating relationships. Exploratory analyses examining ASE as a mediator and both ASE and EI as moderators were also undertaken. Participants included 142 males and 137 females for a total of 279. Of these, 65.6% were African American (AA) 34.4% were Caucasian (EA). Results indicated that both ASE and EI statistically mediated the other respective variable's relation to GPA. With regard to the CRCTs, ASE mediated the relationship between EI and Reading while EI mediated the relationship between ASE and Math. No statistical moderation was found for either EI or ASE. Similarly, no moderation was found for either of the school level variables. Additionally, no significant differences between ethnicities were found for the relationships examined. The statistical mediation results are explained through their potential associations to specific intelligences. It is thought that ASE may be more closely related to verbal-linguistic intelligence (VLI), thus explaining its stronger association with reading; while EI is thought to be more closely associated with logical-mathematical intelligence (LMI), thus explaining its stronger association with math. Limitations, lack of significant moderation, and implications for future research are also discussed.
