Book Description
In the 1990s, net art burst onto the scene as a radical reflection on the role of technology in contemporary art. In Nettitudes, Dutch art critic Josephine Bosma documents the tumultuous history of art as it became situated in the Internet, from the spectacular interventions of the first decade to today's dispersed practices, including online acoustics, poetry and archiving. Never the darling of the media art institutions and ignored by many curators and critics since its emergence, net art still persists as a "non-movement," residing in the cracks of contemporary media culture and based on Internet cultures, which revolve around technology, games, social networks, commerce and politics. Works of net art are almost always interdisciplinary. Whether stage director, filmmaker, sculptor, musician, painter, photographer, writer, poet or dancer, making net art allows the creator to escape from the corner in which traditional art criticism has held them hostage for decades. A well-known exponent of this artistic trend is Jodi (the Dutch-Belgian artist duo Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans). The artist Peter Luining and the Internet personality Mouchette.org also enjoy international renown. Nettitudes provides an analytical foundation and an insider's view on net art's many expressions as it grapples with the aesthetic, conceptual and social issues of our times. Josephine Bosma is an Amsterdam-based journalist and critic who has written on art and new media since 1993. One of the first to probe into and engage with the domain of net art, she has published internationally in books, periodicals and catalogues.

Book Description
Digital art, along with the technological developments of its medium, has rapidly evolved from the digital revolution into the social media era and to the postdigital and post-Internet landscape. This new, expanded edition of this invaluable overview of the medium traces the emergence of artificial intelligence, augmented and mixed realities, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and surveys themes explored by digital artworks in the areas of activism, networks and telepresence, and ecological art and the Anthropocene. Christiane Paul considers all forms of digital art, focusing on the basic characteristics of their aesthetic language and their technological and art-historical evolution. By looking at the ways in which internet art, digital installation, software art, AR and VR haveemerged as recognized artistic practices, Digital Art is an essential critical guide.

Book Description
"Net Pioneers 1.0 discusses media art history with a new, interdisciplinary look at the historical, social, and economic dynamics of our contemporary, networked society. The hype around Net-based art began in the early 1990s, before the Internet had become a commodity. It developed in skeptical parallel to the rise and decline of the new economy. But why does this chapter of art history appear to end so suddenly? Is it that the idea of Net-based art involving itself in a revolutionary spirit in a networked society failed? One might equally well argue that it was far too successful simply to become another media-art genre. Looking today at the social, aesthetic, and conceptual approaches of the early 1990s presented in this book, it is clear that most of them have in fact come true, if in ways other than intended. The contributions cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from art-scholarly methodological debate (Bentkowska-Kafel, Kuni), source-critical analysis (Reisinger), archiving, exhibition, and analytical practice (Ernst, London, Paul, Sakrowski) to media-philosophical aspects (Ries) and technical and artistic innovations (Daniels)."--Résumé de l'éditeur

Book Description
The digital art landscape, i.e., all forms of art that use digital technology as a tool for its creative process, display and presentation, is an extremely complex universe that doesn’t always lend itself easily to the identification of clear-cut formal categories. In this handbook, I’ve tried to neatly and clearly organize the bulk of these creative practices, which are often identified through umbrella terms like “new media art” and “digital art,” going in order from their historical precedents up to more contemporary examples. A large part of this e-book is dedicated to an in-depth look at topics such as crypto art, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), generative art and Web 3.0. In addition, I also cover other phenomena that are unique to contemporary society, such as 3D animation, virtual reality, augmented reality and all that is “post-internet.” Filled with numerous images, this e-book is composed of 15 chapters that are easy to browse thanks to the hypertext table of contents. Part 1 Introduction: labels, labels and more labels! The predecessors of electronic art New media art and globalization Net art: hacktivism and artivism Software art: critical software and social software Digital art: fractals, Flash animation and ASCII art The latest trends: 3D, virtual reality and augmented reality Part 2 Post-internet: digital art makes its way into IRL galleries Digital art and the market: food for thought Survival strategies and the gift economy Hello crypto world! What are non-fungible tokens (NFTs)? Crypto art: digital art in the era of crypto technology Generative art: creativity that taps into non-human systems Web 3.0: a new way to think about the web

Book Description
The history of art from the early nineteenth century on- ward is commonly viewed as a succession of conflicts between innovatory and established styles that culminated in the formalism and aesthetic autonomy of high modernism. In Art and Crisis, first published in 1948, Hans Sedlmayr argues that the aesthetic disjunctures of modern art signify more than matters of style and point to much deeper processes of cultural and religious disintegration. As Roger Kimball observes in his informative new introduction, Art in Crisis is as much an exercise in cultural or spiritual analysis as it is a work of art history. Sedlmayr's reads the art of the last two centuries as a fever chart of the modern age in its greatness and its decay. He discusses the advent of Romanticism with its freeing of the imagination as a conscious sundering of art from humanist and religious traditions with the aesthetic treated as a category independent of human need. Looking at the social purposes of architecture, Sedlmayr shows how the landscape garden, the architectural monument, and the industrial exhibition testified to a new relationship not only between man and his handiwork but also between man and the forces that transcend him. In these institutions man deifies his inventive powers with which he hopes to master and supersede nature. Likewise, the art museum denies transcendence through a cultural leveling in which Heracles and Christ become brothers as objects of aesthetic contemplation. At the center of Art in Crisis is the insight that, in art as in life, the pursuit of unqualified autonomy is in the end a prescription for disaster, aesthetic as well as existential. Sedlmayr writes as an Augustinian Catholic. For him, the underlying motive for the pursuit of autonomy is pride. The lost center of his subtitle is God. The dream of autonomy, Sedlmayr argues, is for finite, mortal creatures, a dangerous illusion. The book invites serious analysis from art cri

Book Description
Digital Arts presents an introduction to new media art through key debates and theories. The volume begins with the historical contexts of the digital arts, discusses contemporary forms, and concludes with current and future trends in distribution and archival processes. Considering the imperative of artists to adopt new technologies, the chapters of the book progressively present a study of the impact of the digital on art, as well as the exhibition, distribution and archiving of artworks. Alongside case studies that illustrate contemporary research in the fields of digital arts, reflections and questions provide opportunities for readers to explore relevant terms, theories and examples. Consistent with the other volumes in the New Media series, a bullet-point summary and a further reading section enhance the introductory focus of each chapter.
