The program covered the following specific areas; (a) flow stresses of metals, (b) instrumentation of forging presses, (c) evaluation and comparison of screw presses and mechanical presses for forging, (d) uniform compression tests and ring tests for determining the flow stress of metals, and (e) methods for predicting and measuring forging load under production conditions. It is expected that the information developed in this program will contribute to the improvement in the design and execution of forging operations. (Author).

Book Description
The handbook provides design engineers with up-to-date information about the many aspects of forging including descriptions of important developments made more recently by industry and/or government. The handbook describes suitable measures for in-process quality control and quality assurance, summarizes relationships between forging practices and important mechanical properties and compares various forging devices to aid in equipment selection. Attention is also given to describing practices for relatively new materials and emerging forging practices. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
The slab method of analysis for predicting forging stresses and loads has been applied to longitudinal (axial) flow, i.e., to extrusion-type forging. Both plane strain and axisymmetric deformations were considered. The flow models have been further studied, and the necessary equations for general use are derived. The flash-line location has been shown to have little effect upon maximum forging load if die-cooling effects are not too large. The present study represents a fundamental method for obtaining detailed information on the mechanics of closed-die forging.

Book Description
The objectives of the manufacturing improvement program was to establish the applications and limitations of analytical approaches in closed-die forging. The study has been concerned mainly with the study of mechanics and interactions of important variables related to the workpieces, the dies, and the equipment selected for forging. Three industrial forging companies participated in the program in conducting forging trials using presses instrumented to determining loads, stresses, and energies used in forging various parts so that correlations between predicted and actual data could be made. Quantitative assessments were made of deformation rates, temperatures, flash geometries, part shapes, materials, and forces required in the forging of aluminum, steel, and titanium parts. (Author).

Book Description
The study surveys the present state of knowledge on the design of die sequences in closed-die forging with a view toward studying the feasibility of establishing an analytical procedure. The contents are comprised of (1) a review of present methods practiced in die-sequency design, (2) a review of factors involved in metal flow, and (3) examples of analytical work that might constitute the background for a more rational study of the closed-die-forging process.
