The single crystal elastic constants of iron and their pressure variation to 3.6 kbar were measured at room temperature by the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The result is expressed in terms of a table of volume change as a function of pressure, which is compared with the 1940, 30 kbar, absolute compression determination of Bridgman. Compression data to 30 kbar for other solids that were measured differentially with respect to iron are reconciled in both the first and second degree coefficients if these are corrected for the ultrasonic coefficients of iron. The correction is especially important for the second degree term and for incompressible materials. (Author).
