The short memoirs in the MEADOWOOD ANTHOLOGY gives us insight into the commonplace happenings and also the remarkable events that occurred in the lives of possibly the greatest generation in our American history. Living in Meadowood Retirement Community we have residents from a variety of professional and military backgrounds who have fascinating stories to write from the Great Depression forward to WW II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars including one on the early days of Arab Spring. We have memoirs from authors who experienced the grimness of wars and somehow were able to write with a subtle humor, and at times also with a sense of the ridiculous; as we read about one day in the life of a young woman, an Italian Resistant Fighter. We have one memoir by a resident that begins with a Jewish Russian ancestor of her husband being conscripted into the Czars Army. He eventually escaped to Israel. One half century later the descendents of this man find safety in America. These are only a few of many stories of victims persecuted for political or religious belief systems and who eventually find sanctuary in our country and later in Meadowood Retirement Community. Aging in Place, a charming expression we have coined, does not mean we exist in an invisible cozy cacoon. We have monthly lectures programmed by one of our retired professors who invites world famous academically acclaimed lecturers, who guide us through new international policies of countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. We also have residents who prefer to do their own thing. One resident moved in and announced that he had never in 20 years had time to read a book. He had been one of the driving forces at NASA; as in sending a man to the moon. He now volunteers with Meals-On-Wheels. He still has not read his first book. Our miniature memoirs, our life stories, are the treasures we leave to our children: perhaps to give to their own.

Miguel Antonio Otero served as the first Hispanic governor of the U.S. Territory of New Mexico, from 1897 to 1906. He was appointed to the office by President William McKinley. Long after his retirement from politics, Governor Otero wrote and published his memoirs in three volumes, a major contribution to New Mexico history. But he also published a biography in 1936 titled “The Real Billy the Kid.” His aim in that book, he proclaimed, was to write the Kid’s story “without embellishment, based entirely on actual fact.” Otero had known the outlaw briefly and also had known the man who killed Billy in 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett. The author recalled Garrett saying he regretted having to slay Billy. Or, as he bluntly put it, “it was simply the case of who got in the first shot. I happened to be the lucky one.” By all accounts, Billy the Kid was much adored by New Mexico’s Hispanic population. Otero asserts that the Kid was considerate of the old, the young and the poor. And he was loyal to his friends. Further, Martin Cháves of Santa Fe stated: “Billy was a perfect gentleman with a noble heart. He never killed a native citizen of New Mexico in all his career, and he had plenty of courage.” Otero was especially admiring of Billy because as a boy in Silver City, “he had loved his mother devotedly.” Such praise must be viewed in the context of the times. Other people, of course, saw Billy as an arch-villain. MIGUEL ANTONIO OTERO rightly distinguished himself as a political leader in New Mexico where he raised a family and lived out his life as a champion of the people, but he is also highly recognized for his career as an author. He published his legendary “My Life on the Frontier, 1864-1882” in 1935, followed by “The Real Billy the Kid: With New Light on the Lincoln County War” in 1936, “My Life on the Frontier, 1882-1897” in 1939, and “My Nine Years as Governor of New Mexico Territory, 1897-1906” in 1940.

This volume explores political change in chiefdoms, specifically how complex chiefdoms emerge and collapse, and how this process—called cycling—can be examined using archaeological, ethnohistoric, paleoclimatic, paleosubsistence, and physical anthropological data. Harriet Tubman is one of America’s most beloved historical figures, revered alongside luminaries including Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Harriet Tubman: Myth, Memory, and History tells the fascinating story of Tubman’s life as an American icon. The distinguished historian Milton C. Sernett compares the larger-than-life symbolic Tubman with the actual “historical” Tubman. He does so not to diminish Tubman’s achievements but rather to explore the interplay of history and myth in our national consciousness. Analyzing how the Tubman icon has changed over time, Sernett shows that the various constructions of the “Black Moses” reveal as much about their creators as they do about Tubman herself. Three biographies of Harriet Tubman were published within months of each other in 2003–04; they were the first book-length studies of the “Queen of the Underground Railroad” to appear in almost sixty years. Sernett examines the accuracy and reception of these three books as well as two earlier biographies first published in 1869 and 1943. He finds that the three recent studies come closer to capturing the “real” Tubman than did the earlier two. Arguing that the mythical Tubman is most clearly enshrined in stories told to and written for children, Sernett scrutinizes visual and textual representations of “Aunt Harriet” in children’s literature. He looks at how Tubman has been portrayed in film, painting, music, and theater; in her Maryland birthplace; in Auburn, New York, where she lived out her final years; and in the naming of schools, streets, and other public venues. He also investigates how the legendary Tubman was embraced and represented by different groups during her lifetime and at her death in 1913. Ultimately, Sernett contends that Harriet Tubman may be America’s most malleable and resilient icon.
