Modelling hydrodynamics is the first step in modelling fluidized bed combustion. This report identifies regions of characteristic hydrodynamics and delimits them according to the particle concentration profile as a basis for the three zone model. This model consists of the dense bed, the splash zone and the freeboard and also includes the effect of the presence of tubes on the extents of the zones. The two-phase flow of gas in the dense bed is examined in some detail and the flow of particles between zones and in the freeboard is discussed. Appendices give modelling details and supporting evidence for some modelling decisions.

A non-isothermal kinetic model for the simulation of the coal combustion process in atmospheric fluidized-bed boilers has been developed. The gas flow dynamic of the bed is based upon the modified bubble assemblage model, which considers the gas jet zone above the distributor plate, bubble formation and growth along bed height, and an emulsion phase containing char and inert or sorbent particles. Devolatilization of coal particles, kinetics of volatile matter combustion, and burning of the resulting char are taken into account. Entrainment and elutriation rates and corresponding size distributions for char and limestone particles are estimated. The model is capable of predicting heat transfer rates to tube bundles immersed in the bed and to waterwalls in the freeboard, as well as overall combustion and thermal efficiencies. Mass and energy balances for gas and solid particles in the bed and freeboard are solved numerically, and on this basis, the temperature and gaseous species profiles along the boiler height are determined. Initial results of simulations regarding gaseous emissions and particle size distributions are presented.

Progress is reported in the development of a mathematical model of a fluidized-bed combustor. The model will include coal combustion phenomena and will incorporate basic mass transport relationships, bubble mechanics, heat transfer and configuration effects. A cold model test bed will be designed, constructed and operated to generate data in support of the effort in developing the mathematical model. In particular, experiments will provide data concerning heat transfer effects of tubes and tube bundles in fluidized beds, bubble formation, dispersion etc. Experiments have been carried out to measure the total heat transfer coefficient between 12.7 mm diameter copper tubes with different surface roughness and glass beads of different sizes. The comparison of results for the rough and technically smooth tubes revealed that the heat transfer coefficient strongly depends on the ratio of pitch (P) to particle diameter anti d/sub p/). By the proper choice of this ratio, P/anti d/sub p/, the total maximum heat transfer coefficient could be increased by as much as 40% over the value for a smooth tube with the same outside diameter. However, if P/anti d/sub p/ ratio is less than unity, the maximum heat transfer coefficient for rough tube is smaller as compared to the smooth tube. The design of the two end plates of the fluidized bed for mounting tube bundles of varying configuration and pitches has been completed and is currently under fabrication in the departmental workshop.
