Book Description
To meet the demands of exponentially growing global energy consumption, extensive research is necessary for future fusion and Generation IV fission reactor power plants; however, structural material performance is a limiting factor. Conventional materials cannot withstand the complex thermomechanical loading, higher operating temperatures, and high irradiation doses. Consequently, research efforts are underway to develop and qualify novel structural materials. Likewise, research on fuel materials seeks to understand and mitigate issues such as oxidation and evolution of the fuel microstructure to high burn-up. To minimize trial-and-error experiments, major fission and fusion materials programs have expanded their use of multiscale materials modeling and simulation. The modeling efforts, in concert with specific experimental validation activities, complement the large experimental programs. This book highlights nuclear materials issues and challenges on experimental and modeling platforms. Topics include: fundamental defect behavior; experimental and theoretical investigations of radiation damage; behavior of oxide dispersion strengthened steels and other advanced structural materials; corrosion and surface coatings; and modeling and performance of nuclear fuels.

Book Description
Physics and Technology of Nuclear Materials presents basic information regarding the structure, properties, processing methods, and response to irradiation of the key materials that fission and fusion nuclear reactors have to rely upon. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with selectively several fundamentals of nuclear physics. Subsequent chapters focus on the nuclear materials science; nuclear fuel; structural materials; moderator materials employed to ""slow down"" fission neutrons; and neutron highly absorbent materials that serve in reactor's power control. Other chapters explore the cooling agents; fluids carrying the energy to its final stage of conversion into electric power; thermal and biological shielding materials; some outstanding reactor components; and irradiated fuel reprocessing. The last two chapters deal with nuclear material quality inspection by destructive and non-destructive methods, and specific materials envisaged for use in future thermonuclear reactors. This monograph will be helpful for a wide range of specialists wishing to gear their research and development, education, and other activities toward the field of nuclear power and nuclear technology.

Book Description
'The text provides an interesting history of previous and anticipated accomplishments, ending with a chapter on the relationship of fusion power to nuclear weaponry. They conclude on an optimistic note, well worth being understood by the general public.'CHOICEThe gap between the state of fusion energy research and public understanding is vast. In an entertaining and engaging narrative, this popular science book gives readers the basic tools to understand how fusion works, its potential, and contemporary research problems.Written by two young researchers in the field, The Future of Fusion Energy explains how physical laws and the Earth's energy resources motivate the current fusion program — a program that is approaching a critical point. The world's largest science project and biggest ever fusion reactor, ITER, is nearing completion. Its success could trigger a worldwide race to build a power plant, but failure could delay fusion by decades. To these ends, this book details how ITER's results could be used to design an economically competitive power plant as well as some of the many alternative fusion concepts.

Book Description
Providing up-to-date numerical data across a range of topics related to renewable energy technologies, Renewable Energies and CO2 offers a one-stop source of key information to engineers, economists and all other professionals working in the energy and climate change sectors. The most relevant up-to-date numerical data are exposed in 201 tables and graphs, integrated in terms of units and methodology, and covering topics such as energy system capacities and lifetimes, production costs, energy payback ratios, carbon emissions, external costs, patents and literature statistics. The data are first presented and then analyzed to project potential future grid, heat and fuel parity scenarios, as well as future technology tendencies in different energy technological areas. Innovative highlights and descriptions of preproduction energy systems and components from the past four years have been gathered from selected journals and international energy departments from G20 countries. As the field develops, readers are invited and encouraged to contact the authors for feedback and comments. The ongoing data collection and analysis will be used – after proper acknowledgment of contributors - to develop new editions. In this way, it is ensured that Renewable Energies and CO2 will remain an up-to-date resource for all those working with or involved in renewable energy, climate change, energy storage, carbon capture and smart grids.

Book Description
Symposium A, 'Material Challenges in Current and Future Nuclear Technologies' was held at the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, November 28-December 2, 2011. The symposium addressed current questions in nuclear materials development, such as the effects of radiation damage on core materials. At the same time, emphasis was placed on research to pre-empt future issues, such as materials with applications in both the proposed GenIV fission designs and fusion reactor cores. There was also linkage between both areas of research, as the requirements for both future fusion and fission reactor technologies are often very similar. The articles in this volume are separated into four broad areas, fuel, radiation effects, corrosion, and structural materials. Each of the areas combines both simulation and experimental work, highlighting the cross-linkage between them and how they can be used to holistically develop new materials for nuclear technologies.
