Book Description
When we embarked on this project to write a book about Manville, we were met with an enthusiastic response. Our appeal to the people of this town for photos, stories and relics of this community's past was met with an outpouring of material. Residents were generous with the photos of their family and friends engaged in clubs and activities, working at businesses and at their homes. They brought us wonderful stories about the history of the town and its evolution. We sincerely thank them for their contributions. This book is for you and we hope that you will find your stories and memories well represented. The original motivation to embark on the project was John Shutack, who unfortunately is not here to see its completion. We have many others to thanks for their contributions including Ruth Bielanski for all of her assistance, George Jakelsky for his extensive knowledge of the people, places, clubs and activities of Manville and Rudy Nowak for recommending, Kathryn Quick, who compiled the history for the book. We sincerely thank Kathryn Quick, a town resident and author, who graciously contributed so much time and energy to this project. This is an on-going project with new history being written each day. We look forward to the next volume and encourage all of our community to save their memories and photos to share with the people of Manville in the future. A. Sandy Filipinni

Judgment Calls
Author: Thomas H. Davenport
Publisher: Harvard Business Review Press
ISBN: 142215811X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Your guide to making better decisions Despite the dizzying amount of data at our disposal today—and an increasing reliance on analytics to make the majority of our decisions—many of our most critical choices still come down to human judgment. This fact is fundamental to organizations whose leaders must often make crucial decisions: to do this they need the best available insights. In Judgment Calls, authors Tom Davenport and Brook Manville share twelve stories of organizations that have successfully tapped their data assets, diverse perspectives, and deep knowledge to build an organizational decision-making capability—a competence they say can make the difference between success and failure. This book introduces a model that taps the collective judgment of an organization so that the right decisions are made, and the entire organization profits. Through the stories in Judgment Calls, the authors—both of them seasoned management thinkers and advisers—make the case for the wisdom of organizations and suggest ways to use it to best advantage. Each chapter tells a unique story of one dilemma and its ultimate resolution, bringing into high relief one key to the power of collective judgment. Individually, these stories inspire and instruct; together, they form a model for building an organizational capacity for broadly based, knowledge-intensive decision making. You’ve read The Wisdom of Crowds and Competing on Analytics. Now read Judgment Calls. You, and your organization, will make better decisions.

Berkshire Beyond Buffett
Author: Lawrence A. Cunningham
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231170041
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 334
Book Description
Berkshire Hathaway, the $300 billion conglomerate that Warren Buffett built, is among the worldÕs largest and most famous corporations. Yet, for all its power and celebrity, few people understand Berkshire, and many assume it cannot survive without Buffett. This book proves that assumption wrong. In a comprehensive portrait of the distinct corporate culture that unites and sustains BerkshireÕs fifty direct subsidiaries, Lawrence A. Cunningham unearths the traits that assure the conglomerateÕs perpetual prosperity. Riveting stories recount each subsidiaryÕs origins, triumphs, and journey to Berkshire and reveal the strategies managers use to generate economic value from intangible values, such as thrift, integrity, entrepreneurship, autonomy, and a sense of permanence. Rich with lessons for those wishing to profit from the Berkshire model, this engaging book is a valuable read for entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, and investors, and it makes an important resource for scholars of corporate stewardship. General readers will enjoy learning how an iconoclastic businessman transformed a struggling shirt company into a corporate fortress destined to be his lasting legacy.
