Book Description
Book Description
Excerpt from First Principles of French Pronunciation This book is for English-speaking people. It has a three fold object. First, it should serve those general readers or speakers of French whose feeling for the language is such that they will not rest content with a mere rough-and-ready approximation to the way in which it is pronounced by Frenchmen. Secondly, its concern is with teachers and their pupils already devoted to the direct method of modem-language study, as also with those who are liberal enough to give that method a trial. Thirdly, it may furnish a handy epitome of its subject for academic students of French, whose needs must be met more in detail by the advanced investigations of the recognized specialists, and particularly those native to the language. Book Description
Excerpt from French Speech and Spelling: A First Guide to French Pronunciation A number of exercises have been added for purposes of revision and to stimulate the pupils to apply their knowledge. In recent years much progress has been made in the application of phonetics to modern language teaching, and there are now many classes in which the pupils acquire the foreign pronunciation by the aid of the symbols of the Association Phonétique Internationale. These were first used in England in 1898, in Dent's First French Book; at the present day they are to be found in almost every French course, and also in books for the teaching of English, German, Spanish, and Latin. The number of teachers who rely on imitation only is decreasing, and the results obtained are steadily becoming more satisfactory. It is with the conviction that Mr Richards' little book will be found a real help to this end that I recommend it to the notice of teachers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Orthoëpist: A Pronouncing Manual Containing About Three Thousand Five Hundred Words; Including a Considerable Number of the Names of Foreign Authors, Etc; That Are Often Mispronounced The object in view has been as much to awaken an interest in the subject-matter as to teach. The pronunciation of the foreign names that will be found in their alphabetical places, and that are frequently mispronounced, will not, it is thought, make the book less accept able to any, while it will perhaps make it more acceptable to some. Those who discover that the same things are said in a plurality of places, will kindly remember that repetition is the only sure road to mental acquirement. Book Description
Excerpt from A Primer of French Pronunciation With this new edition the Primer of French Pronunciation appears in an entirely new form. Eight years ago, when I prepared the first edition, no phonetic alphabet presented especial claims for adoption, and believing that no distinction ought to be made between the practical and the scientific study of the language in this regard, I selected the alphabet with which students of the history of French are familiar the world over. Since then, however, the Michaelis-Passy Dictionary has been published and the alphabet of the Association Phonetique has been used in such practical books as the Fraser and Squair French Grammar and the recent International French-English Dictionary, so that the choice is really no longer an open one. If we are to succeed in the difficult task of teaching an intelligent pronunciation of the language, we must work in unison. The alphabet of the Association Phonetique is open to criticism, but so are other alphabets as well, and, whatever their final value may be, it certainly is poor method to introduce the discussion into the Freshman class or the High School.
