Excerpt from Manual of Practice and Procedure in the United Free Church of Scotland: Prepared by a Committee of the General Assembly, and Published by Authority of the Assembly The Appendix contains Documents, Acts Of Assembly, and various Regulations which frequently require to be referred to in course of procedure, together with information as to the General Assembly's Committees and specimen Styles for various Minutes and formal Documents. These Styles are not to be regarded as Obligatory, but only as specimens of what is suitable in ordinary circumstances. It is hoped that the volume will prove a sufficient guide both to the Courts and to the individual members of the Church in the discharge of their duties and the 'care of their interests. It will serve also to exhibit the developed working Of the Presbyterian System, which our forefathers established on the great fundamental principles laid down in the New Testament for the Church of Christ. There was to be no exercise of lordship or authority by individuals 5 no blind deference to be paid to any one on earth, as teacher, or father, or master. On these principles Presbyterianism was founded, and what was claimed for it at first, and may be claimed for it still, is that it conserves on the one hand the unity, order, and discipline Of a well-constituted Church, and on the other hand the rights and privileges of an intelligent and spiritually-minded Christian people.
