Excerpt from Manual of General Agriculture The experiments in this manual represent actual work done by the author's classes during several years teaching of the subject of general agriculture in High Schools in Northern and Southern California. There is sufficient material to occupy the laboratory time of a High School class at least four periods a week for one year. Not all the exercises are suitable for any one locality, but nearly all can be used any place. The manual is not intended to displace any text. A satisfactory plan for conducting a course in general agriculture is to have each student own a manual and have the school furnish the references to accompany it. As the recitations do not occur every day, one book for three students will be found sufficient. Usually the local library will supply a portion of the books needed. A list of references will be found in the back of this manual. A note book containing a record of each exercise performed should be kept by the student. The following form is suggested: Number and statement of exercise. Exercise. Result. Conclusion. It is unnecessary for the student to copy materials. At the beginning of nearly all the exercises will be found a list of materials needed, but special attention is called to the following, the materials for which cannot be obtained at once: 46, 56, 57, 58, 59, 62, 63, 64, 67, 68, 69. The author wishes to express his thanks for council and material contributed by Principal E. L. Mitchel, Professors W. T. Clarke, R. H. Loughridge, A. D. MacGillivray, H. H. Whetzel, C. S. Wilson, E. Children should not only receive instruction in the various studies now pursued in the schools, but they should be enabled to obtain the rudiments of a correct agricultural education in the forming period of life. Many of them are destined to work upon the surface of the earth, and to use the materials of which it is formed. They are to cooperate with the great powers of nature and to be able, in many instances, to control these powers. They instinctively long to become acquainted with the materials they are to work upon, and the powers they are to work with. An agricultural education should, therefore, be commenced in childhood. Children are always interested in animals and other natural objects. There is scarcely a fact exhibited in nature which does not, at once, interest their curiosity and appeal to their imagination. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Of these, and their various combinations, all matter, solid, liquid and gaseous, is composed. When an element is found occurring naturally, and not combined with another, it is said to exist free in nature. Nearly all Of the substances composing the vegetable, animal and mineral kingdoms, are combinations Of two or more elements. Matter is indestructible. The apparent destruction Of a substance is merely the breaking up of its elements and the formation of new compounds. Many of these elements have an attraction or affinity for each other; the rusting Of iron is merely the union of iron with oxygen which exists in air and water. Heat, light and electricity aid the union of these elements. It has been found that these elements are governed by laws in their union with each other, and that these laws, like those in other departments of nature, are uniform and constant in their operation. One Of these laws is, that elements always unite with each other in certain proportions by weight and volume; should there be an excess Of one element present, it will remain uncombined.
