The duties are so multifarious, and to many now engaged in them they are so novel, that it seemed advan tageous, in the production of a Manual of Public Health, to secure the assistance of three gentlemen severally experienced in each of the branches of knowledge involved. Hence the origination of this manual, in which I have had the advantage of the collaboration of three able and well-known authorities.
