Book Description
OBJECTIVES: Management Development Centre (MDC), in coordination with the Sudanese Businessmen and Employers' Federation and the Sudanese Industries Association, capable of training trainers and providing management training and counselling services to small-scale entrepreneurs using Improve Your Business (IYB) methodology and materials adapted to the Sudanese environment. FINDINGS: The combined sector and modular approach to training was considered successful but the contents of the IYB material needed to be modified before participants considered it relevant to their needs. The educational level of the entrepreneurs was lower than expected. There was a lack of suitable applicants for the trainers positions in the MDC which was due to high educational requirements and experience sought and low salaries offered. Extension officers were either unsuitable or unreliable. RECOMMENDS: Educational requirements for trainers be reduced. Trainers should come from different disciplines, each lecturing on aspects of his own speciality within 3 months of recruitment before gaining experience in a second within 6 months. The role of extension officer should be played by MDC staff positions until employers' organisations are capable of providing services to the target group. Entrepreneurs of the same educational level and from the same sector should be grouped together and the training contents geared to their abilities. LESSONS LEARNED: The educational level of the target group must be taken into account before deciding on the format and content of the adapted IBY material. The likelihood of a lack of appropriately qualified candidates for trainers and extension staff positions needs to be taken into account when designing similar projects.
