At the signing of the Magna Charta, twenty-five men, representing the barons, signed as sureties of the baronial performance, in effect pledging the barons to fulfill their obligations to the Crown in accordance with the terms of the Great Charter. Of these twenty-five sureties only seventeen have identified descendants. Each of the seventeen is represented in the celebrated "Magna Charta Sureties," which traces their connections--line by line and generation by generation--to approximately 160 American colonists. Eight years have passed since the publication of the last edition of this work, however, and in the interval a great many additions, corrections, and revisions have accumulated. Brought to a very high standard by the unremitting efforts of its editor, Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr., this fifth edition incorporates new lines, corrects errors in existing lines, adds recently discovered material, and supplies references where they had previously been omitted. The result is a reliable and authoritative collection of interlocking pedigrees which carry the ancestry of some 160 American colonists back to the thirteenth century. With the possible exception of Weis's "Ancestral Roots" (also published by Genealogical Publishing Co.), this is probably the very best work ever written on the pre-colonial ancestry of American colonists.

Prepared by David Faris, who had assisted Mr. Sheppard with the last two editions of "Ancestral Roots, Plantagenet Ancestry" provides the descent from the later Plantagenet kings of England (Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, and Edward III) of more than one hundred emigrants from England and Wales to the North American colonies before 1701, including many colonists not included in former editions of "Ancestral Roots." All 137 lines in this new volume include the consecutive generations of married couples with the spouse of Plantagenet descent on the left margin, each such individual being the child of the previous generation. Generation 1 names the parents of an emigrant, and the preceding generations are numbered back in time to the Plantagenet kings. Considerable biographical information is provided together with documentation for each generation.

Thomas Dudley was born in 1576 in Yardley-Hastings, Northampton, England. His parents were Roger Dudley and Susanna Thorne. He was a nineteenth generation descendant of William the Conqueror. He married Dorothy Yorke (1582-1643) 25 April 1603 in Hardingstone, Northampton. They had five children. They emigrated in 1630 and settled in Massachusetts where he was assistant governor and governor from 1630 to 1653. He married Katherine Deighton, daughter of John Deighton and Jane Bassett, 14 April 1644. They had three children. He died 31 July 1653 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York.

The Order of Americans of Armorial Ancestry is the only lineage organization based on the right to bear arms as a qualification for membership. The arms to which each Order member's most recent American ancestor was entitled, through either his/her paternal or maternal ancestry, is the basis for this publication. First comes the lineages of the more than 700 members admitted to the order since its inception, arranged in order of membership. The lineages are followed by a section of 300 black-and-white coats of arms (complete with descriptions of colors, etc.). Preceding the arms themselves is a very helpful glossary of heraldic terms. At the back of the volume, the compiler has assembled two indexes: a name index to the nearly 20,000 persons identified in the lineages, and another to the arms, which arranges all the bearers in alphabetical order.
