Book Description
Excerpt from Mademoiselle De La Seigliere: Comedie; With Historical and Grammatical Notes In 1838 he was elected a member of the Academy - an honour never before accorded to a novelist, not even to Lesage, l'abbe Prevost, nor Balzac. On this occasion G. Sand writes You sit as the representative of no new school, but of a school to which belong all authors who write without pretension, simply and power fully, books which are taken up with curiosity, read with interest, and laid down with regret. The following year he was appointed librarian at the palace of St. Cloud (octave Feuillet holding a similar post at Fontainebleau), - a pleasant sinecure, which at once put him in easy circumstances, and allowed him the luxury of helping his brother litterateurs in distress. As an instance of his generosity it may be mentioned that when the publisher Werdet fell into pecuniary difficulties, Sandeau, then at the height of his fame, presented him with the copyright of a novel he had just finished. Placed by his position above want, he unfortunately almost ceased to write, and did not produce anything of note until after the downfall of the Empire, and consequent suppression of his post, when he published several vigorous tales of the war, notably Jean de Thommerag. The last few years of his life were saddened by the death of his only son, an officer of much promise in the navy. After this blow he wrote no more, and died in February 1883.
