The Skin I Am in
Author: Brown-Kelly Alfreada Brown-Kelly
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1440141339
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 74
Book Description
What poetic justice is contained throughout the leaves of history captured in this book! The author chronicles what at first glance seems like the vestiges of a particular journey. The book then takes a turn and proves to be quite instructive as it deals with no one's particular journey, yet, the books is about everyone's journey and maybe even the reader's. THE SKIN I AM IN is about the use of time, contentment, survival, living and love, and ends with a retreat to days past. There is a pattern in the book that engenders winnowing through troubled places as one strives to the keeping of covenant promises in the Scripture. The first theme is a treatise on time, which is reminiscent of the pilgrimage of the early Christians to Mecca, captured in the Psalms and identified as the "Songs of Ascent." This recounting of life experiences is told by those on the pilgrimage where the quest was not necessarily for a single truth but truth in the eyes of the beholder. Yet, this book, "THE SKIN I AM IN," is also on the edge of being prophetic by using metaphors for the seasons of hope throughout one's life. The windows to the soul described in the book were likened to gates in the book of Acts in the Bible. There were many gates but the metaphor here is about the man that waited for his healing at the temple gate called Beautiful. The poetry in "THE SKIN I AM IN," like the man at the temple the gate that waits on healing, waits on healing while sharing the seasons of life. The man at the gate found healing. Alfreada Brown-Kelly uses poetic beauty as she arouses our consciousness. She ends the book by giving the reader hope for a full life and leaves the reader with and a deft appreciation of this inspired work, "THE SKIN I AM IN." -Bertha L. Davis, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN

Bringing the Body to the Stage and Screen
Author: Annette Lust
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810882124
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 365
Book Description
As stage and screen artists explore new means to enhance their craft, a new wave of interest in expressive movement and physical improvisation has developed. And in order to bring authenticity and believability to a character, it has become increasingly vital for actors to be aware of movement and physical acting. Stage and screen artists must now call upon physical presence, movement on stage, non-verbal interactions, and gestures to fully convey themselves. In Bringing the Body to the Stage and Screen, Annette Lust provides stage and screen artists with a program of physical and related expressive exercises that can empower their art with more creativity. In this book, Lust provides a general introduction to movement, including definitions and differences between movement on the stage and screen, how to conduct a class or learn on one's own, and choosing a movement style. Throughout the book and in the appendixes, Lust incorporates learning programs that cover the use of basic physical and expressive exercises for the entire body. In addition, she provides original solo and group pantomimes; improvisational exercises; examples of plays, fiction, poetry, and songs that may be interpreted with movement; a list of training centers in America and Europe; and an extensive bibliography and videography. With 15 interviews and essays by prominent stage and screen actors, mimes, clowns, dancers, and puppeteers who describe the importance of movement in their art and illustrated with dozens of photos of renowned world companies and artists, Bringing the Body to the Stage and Screen will be a valuable resource for theater teachers and students, as well as anyone engaged in the performing arts.

Pea in a Pod, Third Edition
Author: Linda Goldberg
Publisher: Square One Publishers, Inc.
ISBN: 0757054897
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 496
Book Description
*** OVER 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD *** Pregnancy and childbirth are not what they used to be. Back in the good ol’ days, mothers-to-be visited their obstetricians once a month, did exactly what they were told, and gave birth while heavily sedated or anesthetized. Their partners paced nervously in the waiting room, barred from the inner sanctum of the labor and delivery rooms. Although some expectant parents still stand on the sidelines, more choose to be active players. If you want to be a participant rather than a spectator in the birth of your baby, Pea in a Pod, Third Edition is your playbook. Up-to-date and complete, Pea in a Pod is a “one-stop-shopping” guide that provides a wealth of pertinent, accurate information for expectant parents. With topics that begin with fertilization and continue through pregnancy, childbirth, and baby’s first year, this comprehensive work could easily be called Absolutely Everything You Need to Know About Pregnancy, Birth, Breastfeeding, and the Newborn. After presenting a general overview of available birthing options and caregiver choices, the book offers a detailed description of conception and fetal development, along with the physical and emotional changes to expect during pregnancy. It provides important nutritional guidelines; exercise plans for the mother-to-be, new mother, and cesarean mother; information on prenatal tests and procedures; and a wealth of hints for the father-to-be, labor partner, and new father. Also included is a variety of effective relaxation techniques and breathing methods to help manage the work of labor. And since every labor is different and may not necessarily go “by the book,” labor variations are discussed along with the most common interventions and medications. The final chapters focus on the basics of infant care, detailing such topics as breastfeeding, childhood immunizations, and infant massage. Clear, step-by-step instructions for handling emergencies such as choking are presented, as well as directions for performing infant CPR. The birth of a baby is one of the most significant events in a parent’s lifetime. Whether this is your first birth or your first “prepared” birth, Pea in a Pod will help make the journey from pregnancy to parenthood both memorable and rewarding.
