Book Description
Since last six decades, luminescent materials find application in day to day life e.g. in fluorescent lamps television, pickup receivers, light emitting diode, particle radiation detectors and medical sciences. Inorganic crystalline solid phosphors have various uses in industry. The II-VI compounds have long been known and used as efficient electro photo and cathodoluminescent materials. No other class of material displays such variety of luminescent centres capable of producing radiation ranging from IR to UV. During recent years this class of material is used in solid state and opto-electronic devices and particularly as screens in televisions radars and other display devices. Due to commercial and scientific applications these materials have been studied and investigated from the point of view of industrial and technological utility and a very little attention has also been paid to the basic electronic and optical properties of these materials. Particularly some compounds in the form of powder like ZnS, SrS, CdS, CaS, SrSe are widely studied but ZnSe has been almost neglected so far. Hence in the present study ZnSe has been taken as host material for the investigation

Fundamentals of Phosphors
Author: William M. Yen
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420043684
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
Drawing from the second edition of the best-selling Handbook of Phosphors, Fundamentals of Phosphors covers the principles and mechanisms of luminescence in detail and surveys the primary phosphor materials as well as their optical properties. The book addresses cutting-edge developments in phosphor science and technology including oxynitride phosphors and the impact of lanthanide level location on phosphor performance. Beginning with an explanation of the physics underlying luminescence mechanisms in solids, the book goes on to interpret various luminescence phenomena in inorganic and organic materials. This includes the interpretation of the luminescence of recently developed low-dimensional systems, such as quantum wells and dots. The book also discusses the excitation mechanisms by cathode-ray and ionizing radiation and by electric fields to produce electroluminescence. The book classifies phosphor materials according to the type of luminescence centers employed or the class of host materials used and interprets the optical properties of these materials, including their luminescence characteristics and mechanisms. Placing a strong emphasis on those materials that are important from a practical point of view, the coverage also includes those possessing no possibility for practical use but are important from a theoretical standpoint.

Photoluminescent Materials and Electroluminescent Devices
Author: Nicola Armaroli
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319593048
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Phosphor Handbook
Author: Ru-Shi Liu
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000513351
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
A benchmark publication, the first edition of the Phosphor Handbook, published in 1998, set the standard for references in the field. The second edition, updated and published in 2007, began exploring new and emerging fields. However, in the last 14 years, since the second edition was published, many notable advances and broader phosphor applications have occurred. Completely revised, updated, and expanded into three separate volumes, this third edition of the Handbook covers the most recent developments in phosphor research, characterization, and applications. This volume on ‘Fundamentals of Luminescence’ elucidates the theoretical background and fundamental properties of luminescence as applied to solid-state phosphor materials. The book includes the chapters that cover: Basic principles of luminescence, the principal phosphor materials, and their optical properties New developments in principal phosphors in nitrides, perovskite, and silicon carbide Revised lanthanide level locations and its impact on phosphor performance Detailed descriptions of energy transfer and upconversion processes in bulk and nanoscaled particles and core-shell structures Rapid developing organic and polymer luminescent materials and devices
