Book Description
The Computational Methods in Systems Biology (CMSB) workshop series was established in 2003 by Corrado Priami. The purpose of the workshop series is to help catalyze the convergence between computer scientists interested in language design, concurrency theory, software engineering or program verification, and physicists, mathematicians and biologists interested in the systems-level understanding of cellular processes. Systems biology was perceived as being increasingly in search of sophisticated modeling frameworks whether for representing and processing syst- level dynamics or for model analysis, comparison and refinement. One has here a clear-cut case of a must-explore field of application for the formal methods developed in computer science in the last decade. This proceedings consists of papers from the CMSB 2003 workshop. A good third of the 24 papers published here have a distinct formal methods origin; we take this as a confirmation that a synergy is building that will help solidify CMSB as a forum for cross-community exchange, thereby opening new theoretical avenues and making the field less of a potential application and more of a real one. Publication in Springer's new Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics (LNBI) offers particular visibility and impact, which we gratefully acknowledge. Our keynote speakers, Alfonso Valencia and Trey Ideker, gave challenging and somewhat humbling lectures: they made it clear that strong applications to systems biology are still some way ahead. We thank them all the more for accepting the invitation to speak and for the clarity and excitement they brought to the conference.

Book Description
A number of vital therapeutic modalities are not covered adequately in current dermatology textbooks. This book is intended to fill that gap. It originated in a series of special lectures on modem applications of physical modalities given at recent annual meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology; the main topics were radiotherapy, electrosurgery, phototherapy, cryosurgery, and related therapeutic modalities. The authors, recognized authorities in their field, have included much addi tional information which could not be covered in the original lectures because of time limitations. The indications for modem dermatological x-ray therapy reflect the basic views of the recently published guide lines of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. Both text and illustrations are oriented toward the practical aspects of therapy with physical modalities. A special effort was made to bring the contributions up to date; pertinent references have been added for those who wish to pursue particular topics still further. Where there is an apparent overlap between chapters, it was felt to be advantageous because different authors approached their subject from different perspectives. I am most grateful to the various authors who generously contributed despite their many other commitments. I wish, also, to thank the staff of Springer-Verlag for their advice and assistance in the preparation of the manuscript.

Book Description
This book is intended for those wishing to acquire a working knowledge of orthogonal transforms in the area of digital signal processing. The authors hope that their introduction will enhance the opportunities for interdiscipli nary work in this field. The book consists of ten chapters. The first seven chapters are devoted to the study of the background, motivation and development of orthogonal transforms, the prerequisites for which are a basic knowledge of Fourier series transform (e.g., via a course in differential equations) and matrix al gebra. The last three chapters are relatively specialized in that they are di rected toward certain applications of orthogonal transforms in digital signal processing. As such, a knowlegde of discrete probability theory is an essential additional prerequisite. A basic knowledge of communication theory would be helpful, although not essential. Much of the material presented here has evolved from graduate level courses offered by the Departments of Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University and the University of Texas at Arlington, during the past five years. With advanced graduate students, all the material was covered in one semester. In the case of first year graduate students, the material in the first seven chapters was covered in one semester. This was followed by a prob lems project-oriented course directed toward specific applications, using the material in the last three chapters as a basis.

Book Description
Calcium signalling is an astonishing example how a simple caption can trigger and regulate an enormous variety of cellular and physiological responses. Ca2+-signalling routes very often involve Ca2+-binding proteins that sense changes in intracellular [Ca2+] and trigger cellular responses by regulating specific targets. One fascinating group among these Ca2+-sensors are the neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) proteins, named for their localisation in neuronal tissue (although there are reports of their expression in non-neuronal tissues as well). While recent excellent reviews have covered key aspects of this protein group, the field expanded in recent years making it more and more difficult to represent every facet of this ongoing research endeavour. This book is intended to represent properties of NCS proteins.
