Spray pyrolysis of CuInS2 was studied. The concentrations of copper and sulfur in the spray solutions were increased so as to increase the copper content of the films to the stoichiometric level. Although Auger analysis indicates that this was successful, x ray microanalysis has identified the growth of copper-rich crystals on the surfaces of the deposit. Heat treatment in H2S did not improve the stoichiometry. The copper-rich crystals were also found on a sample sprayed from a solution with no excess copper. Heterojunctions of glass/SnO2(Sb)/CdS/CdTe/carbon(Cu)/Ag-In were prepared with a number of methods used to restrict the junction. The various devices failed to exhibit a diode characteristic or a photo-response. Work on this project is being directed toward understanding the type of junction and how it is formed.
