Excerpt from Loverin's Chart of Time, Centograph and Slate: Historical Key; Periods and Epochs This work will place within the reach of professors and teachers, as well as students and others, means by which the memory, easily and effectively, may become possessed of historical events in their chronological order, through the faculties of localization and association, based upon the decimal system of reckoning, at once the most simple and practical. It cannot be contravened that the chronology of history has been almost wholly neglected or ignored by the early writers. That such should have been true in regard to the comparatively modern historians seems incredible; and that at no period until the nineteenth century a chart or map of time is to be found will undoubtedly increase our astonishment and wonder. The Fact Nevertheless Exists! No science is more instructive, nor need there be any more interesting, than history. Whatever efforts, therefore, are in the direction of supplying a want so universal, and of making its study more practical, will be received with approbation by the whole literary world. The mistaken notion (forced), that figures are representatives of time, has long since endowed the subject with the necessity for extraordinary mental effort, and spread the mantle of indifference so effectually that few are found who consider it attractive.
