Book Description
An illuminating history of the song for every kind of music lover Often today, the word ‘song’ is used to describe all music. A free-jazz improvisation, a Hindustani raga, a movement from a Beethoven symphony: apparently, they’re all songs. But they’re not. From Sia to Springsteen, Archie Roach to Amy Winehouse, a song is a specific musical form. It’s not so much that they all have verses and choruses – though most of them do – but that they are all relatively short and self-contained; they have beginnings, middles and ends; they often have a single point of view, message or story; and, crucially, they unite words and music. Thus, a Schubert song has more in common with a track by Joni Mitchell or Rihanna than with one of Schubert’s own symphonies. The Song Remains the Same traces these connections through seventy-five songs from different cultures and times: love songs, anthems, protest songs, lullabies, folk songs, jazz standards, lieder and pop hits; ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ to ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Jerusalem’ to ‘Jolene’. Unpicking their inner workings makes familiar songs strange again, explaining and restoring the wonder, joy (or possibly loathing) the reader experienced on first hearing. ‘As much about singing, musicianship and recording as it is about songwriting, this eclectic ride through a unique choice of songs (everyone will argue for alternatives) is cleverly curated and littered with intriguing details about the creators and their times, filled with loving cross-references to other songs and deft musical analysis. I defy anyone not to leap online to listen to the unfamiliar, or re-listen to old favourites in light of new detail. One of the best games in this book is figuring out why one song follows the other: there’s always an intelligent, often very funny, link.’ —Robyn Archer

Book Description
""My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."" Luke 1:46 & 47 We live in a world where life often seems to have no rhyme or reason. There is so much discord, hatred and confusion. With this lack of harmony, we may ask ourselves, ÒWhere is the Lord our Divine Composer?Ó Then, above all the chaos in the stillness of your heart, there are words so loud you need to listen; there may even be a desire to write them down. It is not the volume I describe, but the intensity of awareness that comes with God's Òstill small voiceÓ which billows, ÒYou are not alone.Ó His Voice is incomparable, for it permeates with His Love. God's Love like a mighty wave saturating your soul, like a rolling flame consuming your heart. And to His Love we all must respond...

Book Description
The poems in Songs of Praise were written while sitting in the choir stand and listening to Rev. Frank Calloway preach. Every Sunday he said something that inspired me and opened my mind to writing a poem. I started writing these poems in 1974 and didn’t stop. In 1995 I decided I had enough poems for a book. I still added more poems to this collection, and I’m still being inspired everyday to continue to write inspirational poetry.

Book Description
When James is hired by the Duke of Dorchester to deliver a young Arab stallion to the colony of Newfoundland in the year 1800, he and the duke’s daughter, Alicia, realize this is a perfect opportunity for them to escape together to the New World. They would cross the sea, James would deliver the young horse to a Mr. Penney who lived on Bell Island, and then, they would be free to live their lives as husband and wife. Nothing could stop them, they thought. But their ship, the Hindsight cannot withstand the unrelenting waves of an Atlantic storm near the Newfoundland coastline. It slips beneath the surface. James and Alicia are tied to each other and to the leads they had secured around their Arab stallion. Bred to meet any challenge, he surges onward to an unknown shore. Alicia however, gives in to the ice-cold sea. James catches sight of a single light, flickering in the distance. The young black stallion senses shore and is able to scramble up on a rocky beach. Out of the darkness come two Newfoundlanders. Knowing the secrets to outsmart Poseidon’s deadly hand, Ted and Marion Martin get to work. Equally important and pivotal to the entire saga is the lonely Mr. Robert Penney. Overwhelmed with joy when James delivers the young stallion to his doorstep, Mr. Penney offers James, Alicia and their two Newfoundland friends an opportunity that sweeps Rock Solid through the next fifty years of true-to-life Newfoundland history. Helfenstein’s tale has been taken from the research she absorbed while in search of her own Newfoundland identity.
