El Concilio Vaticano II reconoció solemnemente la misteriosa y operativa presencia de la Iglesia en la existencia y en la acción de los laicos señalando que "están especialmente llamados a hacer presente y operante a la Iglesia en aquellos lugares y circunstancias en que sólo puede llegar a ser sal de la tierra a través de ellos" (Lumen Gentium). Sin embargo, este novedoso mensaje está aún a la espera de una auténtica toma de conciencia por parte de los mismos fieles laicos, de una mayor profundización teológica y de una verdadera asimilación en el plano pastoral. La presente monografía es un valioso intento de responder, al segundo de estos retos. Para ello, la autora explora inicialmente la comprensión eclesial de los laicos en los primeros siglos del cristianismo a través de los testimonios de la Escritura y de los Padres de la Iglesia. Pasa a analizar el adormecimiento de esta percepción en los siglos posteriores y su despertar en el siglo XX. Y, finalmente, presenta y profundiza en la propuesta teórica y práctica del Concilio Vaticano II y de la teología del siglo XX, con la mirada puesta en los nuevos retos que propone el actual escenario de la nueva evangelización.
