La Segunda Gran Guerra se diferenció de todas las anteriores, en cualquier período histórico, porque no solamente afectó a soldados empeñados en matarse para conquistar o defender posiciones, sino que Alemania, la nazificada, rompió todos los esquemas y principios bélicos al añadir en sus planes expansionistas la eliminación de seres humanos considerados tanto enemigos del pueblo alemán como de la raza, mediante el exterminio masivo y usando el poder para el sometimiento de la población alemana primero y europea después. Por primera vez los Estados vencedores (Estados Unidos, Gran Bretaña, Francia y la Unión Soviética) promulgan unos Estatutos mediante los cuales ya no sancionan a la potencia perdedora, sino que persiguen, detienen y juzgan a sus líderes de forma individualizada como responsables de los crímenes cometidos tanto dentro como fuera de sus fronteras naturales. Se crean figuras legales como Crímenes de Guerra o Contra la Humanidad para condensar de forma legible los crímenes cometidos contra la población civil y prisioneros de guerra desarmados; se penaliza nominalmente a quienes rebasan todos los principios que diferencian al ser humano de la bestia amparándose en el poder y el miedo de sus víctimas. El resultado de Nuremberg para los años posteriores ha sido fructífero; conflictos bélicos internos o extraterritoriales han sido observados por la Sociedad de Naciones primero (1919-1946) y la Organización de Naciones Unidas después (desde 1945) para garantizar que estos conflictos se resuelvan dentro de unos protocolos de respeto y coherencia primando siempre las decisiones de cada pueblo pudiendo intervenir para mediar y pacificar las partes implicadas en los conflictos y el mantenimiento de unas reglas justas y equitativas para cada una de ellas; por supuesto la protección de la población indefensa y la capacidad de perseguir y juzgar a los líderes de una determinada nación pueden considerarse los principales logros de Nuremberg.
