Book Description
‘Anyone who writes about the Tudor century puts his head into a number of untamed lions’ mouths.’ G.R. Elton, Preface Geoffrey Elton (1921–1994) was one of the great historians of the Tudor period. England Under the Tudors is his major work and an outstanding history of a crucial and turbulent period in British and European history. Revised several times since its first publication in 1955, England Under the Tudors charts a historical period that witnessed monumental changes in religion, monarchy, and government – and one that continued to shape British history long after. Spanning the commencement of Henry VII's reign to the death of Elizabeth I, Elton’s magisterial account is populated by many colourful and influential characters, from Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, and Thomas Cromwell to Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots. Elton also examines aspects of the Tudor period that had been previously overlooked, such as empire and commonwealth, agriculture and industry, seapower, and the role of the arts and literature. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new foreword by Diarmaid MacCulloch.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Chronicle of England During the Reigns of the Tudors, Vol. 1: From A. D. 1485 to 1559 It is not necessary to follow this investigation further, but the mention of' it was essential as affording the first step in the evidence as to the authenticity and authorship of the Chronicle. There 18 no doubt then as to its being one of those nume1ous City Chronicles which were at this period so often kept by intelligent Londoners for their own satisfaction and the perusal of their friends and descendants, without any ulterior intention 'of publication. In this instance, the ms., which has been preserved amongst the family archives of the noble house of Percy, is not the original but a transcript of' the time of J ames I. Bearing no trace of the author's name, or indication of the time at which he lived. We are couse quently compelled to fall back on internal evidence, and fortunately several incidental allusions made by the author to his own family connections furnish us with the desired information. The most direct and valuable of these is a passage in which he claims relation ship With the great statesman of Henry the Eighth's reign, Lord Chancellor Wriothesley, afterwards, on l6th F ebruary, 1547 created Earl of Southampton: This yeare in Aprill, my cosin Mr. Thomas Wriosley was made the Kinges Secretarie, and Mr. Sadler, of the Privie Chamber, joyned with him, and were booth made knightes also. Book Description
Excerpt from Church and State Under the Tudors A new book on a subject on which so much has been already written may seem to call for an apology. I think, however, that there are several reasons why such a book may be acceptable. A very large amount of new material for the history of the sixteenth century has been brought to light in recent years by the publication of State papers, ambas sadors' letters, and other original documents which were formerly but little known. Much of this, it is true, has been worked up into many volumes by learned and able writers, to whom I am greatly indebted; but of these, some are works read almost exclusively by students ex professo, and many others, from the extent of ground which they have to cover, are too voluminous for ordinary readers: some, too, are written with so strong a party bias as to mislead rather than guide those who consult them.
