Book Description
This book brings together a body of new research which looks both backwards and forwards to consider how far the London 2012 Olympic legacy has been delivered and how far it has been a hollow promise. Cohen and Watt consider the lessons that can be learnt from the London experience and aptly apply them other host cities, specifically Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. The Olympics are often described as a ‘mega-event’ in a way that assumes the host cities have no other existence outside, before or beyond the contexts imposed by the Games themselves. In terms of regeneration, the London 2012 Olympics promised to trigger a mega-regeneration project that was different to what had come before. This time the mistakes of other large-scale projects like London Docklands and Canary Wharf would be put right: top-down planning would be replaced by civic participation, communication and ‘the local’. This edited collection questions how far the 2012 London legacy really is different. In so doing, it brings fresh evidence, original insights and new perspectives to bear on the post-Olympics debate. A detailed and well-researched study, this book will be of great interest to scholars of urban geography, sociology, urban planning, and sports studies.

Book Description
The Olympics have developed into the world's premier sporting event. They are simultaneously a competitive exhibition and a grand display of cooperation that bring together global cultures on ski slopes, shooting ranges, swimming pools, and track ovals. Given their scale in the modern era, the Games are a useful window for better comprehending larger cultural, social, and historical processes, argues Jules Boykoff, an academic social scientist and a former Olympic athlete. In Activism and the Olympics, Boykoff provides a critical overview of the Olympic industry and its political opponents in the modern era. After presenting a brief history of Olympic activism, he turns his attention to on-the-ground activism through the lens of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Here we see how anti-Olympic activists deploy a range of approaches to challenge the Olympic machine, from direct action and the seizure of public space to humor-based and online tactics. Drawing on primary evidence from myriad personal interviews with activists, journalists, civil libertarians, and Olympics organizers, Boykoff angles in on the Games from numerous vantages and viewpoints. Although modern Olympic authorities have strived—even through the Cold War era—to appear apolitical, Boykoff notes, the Games have always been the site of hotly contested political actions and competing interests. During the last thirty years, as the Olympics became an economic juggernaut, they also generated numerous reactions from groups that have sought to challenge the event’s triumphalism and pageantry. The 21st century has seen an increased level of activism across the world, from the Occupy Movement in the United States to the Arab Spring in the Middle East. What does this spike in dissent mean for Olympic activists as they prepare for future Games?

Book Description
Tourism is the UK's 5th largest industry employing over 1.4 million people and generating over £85 billion for the economy per annum. This report, from the Culture, Media and Sport Committee (HCP 133-I, session 2007-08, ISBN 9780215521705) examines tourism from a broader perspective, looking at governance, funding, skills and the environment. An earlier report focused on the structure of the tourism industry (HCP 65, session 2002-03, ISBN 9780215007957). The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is the sponsor department for tourism, whilst promotion of UK destinations overseas is the reponsibility of VisitBritain. The English Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) have responsibility for regional tourism. In the past decade there has been little growth in the domestic tourism sector (tourism in the UK) which accounts for 80% of the value to the industry. The Committee expressed a strong reservation in the funding cut to VisitBritain by the DCMS, from £49.9 million to £40 million. This funding cut could also have an impact on the marketing and promotion of UK tourism overseas with the 2012 Olympic Games representing a major opportunity for the UK's tourism industry. The Committee also sees insufficient incentives for local authorities to invest in tourism. The Committee also expresses concern at the lack of confidence displayed by the tourism industry in DCMS. The Committee would like to see tourism becoming a mainstream issue in government. The Committee though does support the Government's initiative in raising the quality of accommodation and an increase those accredited. The UK is perceived to have poor levels of customer service, despite £500 million being spent by the public sector on skills development. The Committee also feels there is too heavy a reliance on a migrant workforce in the tourism industry and greater efforts are needed to employ locally unemployed people. The cost of visting the UK is also expensive, in part due to charges payable by overseas visitors, averaging £207 per person in visa, taxes and other government charges. The Committee recommends that the Government reviews options that would make obtaining a visa a simpler process. For Volume 2, Oral and written evidence (HCP 133-II, ISBN 9780215521699).

Book Description
This is the second issue of IARS’ Youth Voice and the first of three to have a special focus on the 2012 Olympics 1. With the games only two years away, it is timely to reflect on the progress made in preparation for the games, its impact on the lives of young Londoners and the legacy they will be handed when the party is over. This reflection is done by young people in London, who tell us whether they think they are getting what was promised when the bid for the games was initially submitted in 2003 and what impact if any the games may have on their lives and that of their peers. The articles take the form of opinion pieces written in an essay style and each focuses on a distinct topic chosen by the young contributors and informed by IARS’ Youth Advisory Group.
