Book Description
This is an all-encompassing and exhaustive exposition of the theory of infinite-dimensional Unitary Representations of Locally Compact Groups and its generalization to representations of Banach algebras. The presentation is detailed, accessible, and self-contained (except for some elementary knowledge in algebra, topology, and abstract measure theory). In the later chapters the reader is brought to the frontiers of present-day knowledge in the area of Mackey normal subgroup analysisand its generalization to the context of Banach *-Algebraic Bundles.

Book Description
The Operator Theory conferences, organized by the Department of Mathematics of INCREST and the University of Timi~oara, are conceived as a means to promote cooperation and exchange of information between specialists in all areas of operator theory. This volume consists of a careful selec£ion of papers contributed by the participants of the 1986 Conference. They reflect most of the topics dealt with by the modern operator theory, including recent advances in dual operator algebras and the fnvariant subspace problem, operators in indefinite metric spaces, hyponormal, quasi triangular and decomposable operators, various problems in C*- and W*-algebras and so on. The research contracts of the Department of Mathematics of INCREST with the National Council for Science and Technology of Romania provided the means for developing the research activity in mathematics; they represent the generous framework of these meetings, too. It is our pleasure to acknowledge the financial support of UNESCO which also contributed to the success of this meeting. We are indebted to Professor Israel Gohberg for including these Proceedings in the OT Series and for valuable advice in the editing process. Birkhiiuser Verlag was very cooperative in publishing this volume. Camelia Minculescu, Iren Nemethi and Rodica Stoenescu dealt with the dif ficult task of typing the whOle manuscript using a Rank Xerox 860 word processor; we thank them for the excellent job they did.

Book Description
George Mackey was an extraordinary mathematician of great power and vision. His profound contributions to representation theory, harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics left a rich legacy for researchers that continues today. This book is based on lectures presented at an AMS special session held in January 2007 in New Orleans dedicated to his memory. The papers, written especially for this volume by internationally-known mathematicians and mathematical physicists, range from expository and historical surveys to original high-level research articles. The influence of Mackey's fundamental ideas is apparent throughout. The introductory article contains recollections from former students, friends, colleagues, and family as well as a biography describing his distinguished career as a mathematician at Harvard, where he held the Landon D. Clay Professorship of Mathematics.

Book Description
Ring theorists and researchers in invariant theory and operator algebra met at Bowdoin for the 1984 AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference to exchange ideas about group actions on rings. This work discusses topics common to the three fields, including: $K$-theory, dual actions, semi-invariants and crossed products.

Book Description
A modern treatment of this complex mathematical topic for students beginning research in operator algebras as well as mathematical physicists. Topics include the algebra of compact operators, sheaves, cohomology, the Brauer group and group actions, and the imprimivity theorem. The authors assume a knowledge of C*-algebras, the Gelfand-Naimark Theorem, continuous functional calculus, positivity, and the GNS- construction.
