Book Description
Papers presented within this volume cover a wide range of topics related to programming distributed memory machines. Distributed memory architectures, although having the potential to supply the very high levels of performance required to support future computing needs, present awkward programming problems. The major issue is to design methods which enable compilers to generate efficient distributed memory programs from relatively machine independent program specifications. This book is the compilation of papers describing a wide range of research efforts aimed at easing the task of programming distributed memory machines.

Book Description
Interest in the field of parallel processing has soared in this decade. Response to the annual conference held at Pheasant Run is clear proof: in the early 1980s just over 100 papers were submitted each year; in 1987 over 400 papers were considered. Such heightened interest is both gratifying and challenging in that the increasingly demanding applications in science, medicine, and industry that result from these studies are dependent upon the parallel systems as computing resources. The studies in this volume describe recent advances in all aspects of parallel/distributed logic circuits, impact of VLSI to parallel processor architecture, various concurrent-, distributed-, parallel-, pipeline-, or multiple-processor architectures; processor memory interconnections; computer networks; distributed databases; reliability and fault tolerance, modeling and simulation techniques; performance measurements; operating systems; languages; algorithms; mathematical analysis; and various application studies A rigorous standard governed the paper selection process in an effort to insure that the proceedings reflect the state of the art in parallel processing theory, design, and applications. Of vital interest to researchers, engineers, scientists, programmers, systems analysts, managers, and other interested in the design and application of parallel/distributed processors and processing.

Book Description
This handbook presents fundamental knowledge on the hardware/software (HW/SW) codesign methodology. Contributing expert authors look at key techniques in the design flow as well as selected codesign tools and design environments, building on basic knowledge to consider the latest techniques. The book enables readers to gain real benefits from the HW/SW codesign methodology through explanations and case studies which demonstrate its usefulness. Readers are invited to follow the progress of design techniques through this work, which assists readers in following current research directions and learning about state-of-the-art techniques. Students and researchers will appreciate the wide spectrum of subjects that belong to the design methodology from this handbook.

Book Description
Embedded systems are informally defined as a collection of programmable parts surrounded by ASICs and other standard components, that interact continuously with an environment through sensors and actuators. The programmable parts include micro-controllers and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLIS Approach is intended to give a complete overview of the POLIS system including its formal and algorithmic aspects, and will be of interest to embedded system designers (automotive electronics, consumer electronics and telecommunications), micro-controller designers, CAD developers and students.

Book Description
The main intention of this book is to give an impression of the state-of-the-art in system-level memory management (data transfer and storage) related issues for complex data-dominated real-time signal and data processing applications. The material is based on research at IMEC in this area in the period 1989- 1997. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the data dominated characteristics of this domain, we have adopted a target architecture style and a systematic methodology to make the exploration and optimization of such systems feasible. Our approach is also very heavily application driven which is illustrated by several realistic demonstrators, partly used as red-thread examples in the book. Moreover, the book addresses only the steps above the traditional high-level synthesis (scheduling and allocation) or compilation (traditional or ILP oriented) tasks. The latter are mainly focussed on scalar or scalar stream operations and data where the internal structure of the complex data types is not exploited, in contrast to the approaches discussed here. The proposed methodologies are largely independent of the level of programmability in the data-path and controller so they are valuable for the realisation of both hardware and software systems. Our target domain consists of signal and data processing systems which deal with large amounts of data.
