Book Description
This collection investigates various issues of investment and credit that are of importance to any developing economy. It uses micro- and macro-economic data from Ethiopia to analyse such topics as determinants of foreign direct investment, of bank credit and trade credit, microfinance and poverty reduction, and rural credit issues. The book applies sophisticated, state-of-the-art statistical techniques to analyse the data and derive policy recommendations. To the extent that the Ethiopian economy shares many features and policy issues with other developing economies, the text will be of interest to academics working in the field of development economics, and also to policy makers and policy analysts in developing countries and in development agencies throughout the world.

Book Description
This short paper reviews recent literature on the use of long-term finance in developing economies (relative to advanced ones) to identify where long-term financing occurs, and what role different financial intermediaries and markets play in extending this type of financing. Although banks are the most important providers of credit, they do not seem to offer long-term financing. Capital markets have grown since the 1990s and can provide financing at fairly long terms. But few firms use these markets. Only some institutional investors provide funding at long-term maturities. Governments might help to expand long-term financing, although with limited policy tools.

Book Description
Firms in developing countries that seek outside financing for investment must often choose their debt-equity combinations in the face of financial market constraints on debt service, on outside equity financing, and on internal finance (endowments). Inefficiencies in the allocation of available finance and in the equity-debt choices that can ensue can be prevented by appropriate policy measures to improve information on profitable investment opportunities and about firms; to directly strengthen financial intermediation; and to support appropriate credit guarantee schemes.

Book Description
How important is financial development for economic development? A costly state verification model of financial intermediation is presented to address this question. The model is calibrated to match facts about the U.S. economy, such as intermediation spreads and the firm-size distribution for the years 1974 and 2004. It is then used to study the international data, using cross-country interest-rate spreads and per-capita GDP. The analysis suggests that a country like Uganda could increase its output by 140 to 180 percent if it could adopt the world's best practice in the financial sector. Still, this amounts to only 34 to 40 percent of the gap between Uganda's potential and actual output. Charts and tables.

Book Description
This paper examines the impact of interest rates and inflation on bank loans and investment within a framework that mimics the financial sectors prevailing in most low-income developing countries. The paper emphasizes the importance of treating the lending and deposit rates of interest as distinct parameters in investment equations. The spread between the two rates is indicative of default risk and has a negative impact on incremental loan amounts associated with higher lending rates, in particular in economies with flawed institutions. The model presented in the paper highlights the importance of promoting macroeconomic stability and upgrading institutions and informational infrastructure.

Book Description
This paper explores the contribution of credit growth and the composition of credit portfolio (corporate, consumer, and housing credit) to economic growth in emerging market economies (EMs). Using cross-country panel regressions, we find significant impact of credit growth on real GDP growth, with the magnitude and transmission channel of the impact of credit on real activity depending on the specific type of credit. In particular, the results show that corporate credit shocks influence GDP growth mainly through investment, while consumer credit shocks are associated with private consumption. In addition, taking Brazil as a case study, we use a time series model to examine the role that the expansion and composition of credit played in driving real GDP growth in the past. The results of the case study are consistent with those found in the cross-country panel regressions.
