Book Description
Sunlight is part of everyday life and we accept it as good-and good it is in a number of ways. The sun is our source of warmth, and of the light by which we see. It is, in fact, the source of the energy with which life continues on earth. It furnishes energy for photosynthesis, and the pro ducts of photosynthesis constitute our food, building materials, and fuel. A steady state of balance and fine interrelationships exists between life on earth and all the forces and stresses in nature. This book will pin point the balance and relationships we share with sunlight. Our primary focus will be on the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, and on the ultraviolet photobiology of life on earth. This is the story of the effects of the sun's ultraviolet radiation, both good and bad, on all of us and all of life. We will explore the nature of the sun's ultraviolet radiation as it reaches the earth's surface today, and as it probably affected the earth in the distant past; and examine the effect of such radiation on all life, unicellular organisms as well as multicellular plants and animals. The effects of the sun's ultraviolet rays are primarily a result of their action upon cells, and secondarily, a result of their interactions between cells. The cell of a multicellular organism-man included-is also part of the tissue of an organ, and the organ is part of the whole organism.

Book Description
Wouldn't it be amazing to delay getting 'old'? To live past 100 and still be vigorous, active and clear-thinking? To stay so healthy through your later years that you rarely have to visit your doctor? This is not just wishful thinking. There are people in their nineties - and older - who still work, play sports and enjoy an active social life. They have avoided the diseases which we wrongly think of as a natural part of growing old. You too can ward off these diseases. All it takes is some simple changes to what you eat, drink and do. How to Live to 110 is a scientifically grounded, no-nonsense guide to your best chances for a healthy, long life. It explains: Key processes in your body and how modern living messes these up; Straightforward ways to avoid heart disease, cancer and the other big killers; How to delay dementia, keep free from infections and avoid accidents; What foods to eat - and to avoid - so your body stays healthy and does not put on fat; Ways to lose fat and keep it off; What really makes the difference; debunking some common myths. Professor Brian Kirby has worked for more than 40 years in the NHS and has led health promotion organisations nationally and internationally and in 1997 received an OBE for his work. His son Tim Kirby is a full-time writer with a PhD in physiology. Together they have created a clear and informative guide packed with diagrams and advice for everyone aged 9 to 109. What better present could you give yourself, your family and your friends than the gift of great health and a long life?

Book Description
“Fans of hard sf will enjoy this space adventure” that follows Farside in the Grand Tour series from the six-time Hugo Award winner (Library Journal). The entire world is thrilled by the discovery of a new Earthlike planet. Advance imaging shows that the planet has oceans of liquid water and a breathable oxygen-rich atmosphere. Eager to gain more information, a human exploration team is soon dispatched to explore the planet, now nicknamed New Earth. All of the explorers understand that they are essentially on a one-way mission. The trip takes eighty years each way, so even if they are able to get back to Earth, nearly 200 years will have elapsed. They will have aged only a dozen years thanks to cryonic suspension, but their friends and family will be gone and the very society that they once knew will have changed beyond recognition. The explorers are going into exile, and they know it. They are on this mission not because they were the best available, but because they were expendable. Upon landing on the planet they discover something unexpected: New Earth is inhabited by a small group of intelligent creatures who look very much like human beings. Who are these people? Are they native to this world, or invaders from elsewhere? While they may seem inordinately friendly to the human explorers, what are their real motivations? What do they want? Moreover, the scientists begin to realize that this planet cannot possibly be natural. They face a startling and nearly unthinkable question: Could New Earth be an artifact?
