Book Description
What could be more thrilling than to run with a band of wild mustangs — and to share Little Pinto’s instinct to survive? Deep in the heart of the canyon, Little Pinto is just three weeks old. Still a bit unsteady on his feet, he must be ready to travel with his family, a band of rare wild mustangs, as they search for water along the desert flats. Led by the colt’s father, Old White Face, the band roams freely, but must always be alert for signs of danger. At his signal, they are ready to scatter to safety, whether a strange stallion threatens or a whining plane swoops overhead. But can Little Pinto keep up?

Book Description
There are close to 40,000 wild mustangs in the United States. Some on islands, some on mountaintops, some on vast prairies, and some on land where oil-drilling rigs and logging trucks are constant visitors. Most of this land is public and under the management of the BLM (Bureau of Land Management), making it accessible to anyone willing to drive the backroads to get there. The American Mustang Guidebook is a combination travel guide, horse lovers' publication, natural history, and American history resource book all rolled into one. Illustrated within the pages are the beauty and natural landscapes of wild horses in America, maps to help you find where they live, and sections on the history, behavior, and color genetics of this magnificent animal. Detailed state-by-state directions and maps show where to best view America's wild horses in their native pastures, and complete information is included on BLM adoption and training of a mustang. Contact names and addresses of the state BLM offices, a list of wild horses handlers, local and national wild horse organizations, and a list of other resources are also included, making this a complete and unique reference for nature and horse lovers everywhere.

Book Description
In this celebrated collection of essays, the real and the legendary American West collide, and in their wake we are blessed with the carefully crafted and sharp-witted observations of Frederick Turner - historian, storyteller, biographer, and naturalist. Of Chiles, Cacti, and Fighting Cocks, expanded with three new essays, explores the crossroads where Eastern America's imagination meets the hard twist, rough-and-tumble West, a place where legends and men have been made and broken. ''A winsome collection of notes on the American West that shines a light down into the back corners of history, emerging with tales and insights as hearty and unceremonious as the people and society Turner portrays.''

Book Description
Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program: A Way Forward reviews the science that underpins the Bureau of Land Management's oversight of free-ranging horses and burros on federal public lands in the western United States, concluding that constructive changes could be implemented. The Wild Horse and Burro Program has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate the population sizes of horses and burros, to model the effects of management actions on the animals, or to assess the availability and use of forage on rangelands. Evidence suggests that horse populations are growing by 15 to 20 percent each year, a level that is unsustainable for maintaining healthy horse populations as well as healthy ecosystems. Promising fertility-control methods are available to help limit this population growth, however. In addition, science-based methods exist for improving population estimates, predicting the effects of management practices in order to maintain genetically diverse, healthy populations, and estimating the productivity of rangelands. Greater transparency in how science-based methods are used to inform management decisions may help increase public confidence in the Wild Horse and Burro Program.
