Book Description
KILL THE BEAST, JOHN! KILL IT! - Meet twelve-year-old John Greber, who describes the dark clouds of daily life he, his mother, Ellie, and six- year-old sister, Marny, live under. The fear and loathing that exist within a home ruled by the iron fist of an abusive father is established on the very first page. It is impossible not to feel, in the pit of your stomach, the inevitable onslaught of catastrophe. Johns beast of a father is unpredictable and dangerous. He takes the storybook villain to a whole new level of greed and ignorance. The beast finally goes too far when he disappears, taking Marny with him. The search for her leads John and Ellie into the Land, a place they couldnt have imagined in their wildest dreams. (Think of Candyland crossed with Gregory Maguires vision of Oz and youll have something of an idea.) Allen skillfully combines the everyday world with the fantastic, a seemingly seamless combination which reminds the reader of the very best of fantasy novels. Yet, after all of the tragedies and triumphs are said and done, Goneaway, Into the Land, will leave you with a feeling of hope and a yearning for more.

Joey, the Boy from the Sky
Author: Fairbanks
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1524516430
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
Joey, the Boy from the Sky By Fairbanks Synopsis It is like a fairy tale, a modern-day fairy tale. The first part of this story is a mystery which builds to an absurd fantasy premise that the reader is encouraged to accept. To give it away would spoil it. The rest of the story is a quest for justice and for resolution. It is a story about a wholesome relationship between a man and a boy. The story reiterates universal truths about hope and about looking forward in life, as in this quote from a victim character at the end of the story: We must not wallow like pigs in the mud, feeling sorry for ourselves and blaming. But at the same time, we must never forget! The eccentric story is set in outback Australiaand Aboriginal Australiaand then in the nations capital, Canberra, and then preposterously in the Kalahari in Botswana. The central (title) character is a young boy-hero emotively but also realistically presented. Joey takes a large host of other characters and the worldand the readeron a yellow-brick-road adventure which captivates and inspires. Joey and his mentor / father figure, Adam, are rescued after The Escape by an Aboriginal family in the outback and then journey through an epic saga, trying to resolve an impossible quest to save Joeys people. In the end, the story is more than a quest but also a reflection on hope and inspiration in life. Always there is Joey. And everyone loves Joey.

The Front Page
Author: Christopher Gleeson
Publisher: ATF Press
ISBN: 192151101X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 188
Book Description
For most of the front pages that follow, my inspiration has been twofold - to elaborate some touching story from my everyday life experience, however banal, and use it as a stepping stone to illustrate how we might more easily find God and be found by God in all things. Central to Ignatian spirituality is the belief that our world is transparent, reflecting constantly a God who works in the depths of everything. St Ignatius Loyola saw the world as very user friendly. For him every part of it, from the stars in the heavens to the flowers of the field, elevated his mind and heart to God. In Ribadeneira's Life of Ignatius we learn how even the smallest things could make his spirit soar upwards to God, who even in the smallest things is Greatest. At the sight of a little plant, a leaf, a flower or a fruit, an insignificant worm or a tiny animal Ignatius could soar free above the heavens and reach through into things which lie beyond the senses. (Life I11 5381) Seeking and finding God in all things works on the belief that God is already present in our world and it is our task to uncover his presence and help others to do the same. It is very different to the old, perhaps arrogant, concept of ministry which talked about bringing God to the world.
