The Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor
Author: Thomas B. Cochran
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317370759
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
In this book, Thomas B. Cochran takes a critical look at the economic and environmental arguments which have been made in favour of an early introduction of the liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) as a central component of the United States electrical energy system. First published in 1974, Cochran presents LMFBR as having no environmental advantage over light water reactors and the high temperature gas reactor and seriously questions the economic advantages. This title should be a useful for students interested in environment and sustainability studies, and it is a valuable resource for discussions of future energy strategy.

1000 MW(e) Metal-fueled Fast Breeder Reactor
Author: L. E. Link
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Breeder reactors
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
A preliminary design study of a metal-fueled fast power breeder reactor has been made to explore the burnup limits using a model with fuel elements that have sufficient void volume for expansion of gaseous fission products. A discharge burnup of 6% appears to be a reasonable limit, according to the model, for a somewhat degraded neutron spectrum with significant Doppler broadening and a breeding ratio of about 1.5. The expansion volume is suitable for including larger fractions of titanium or zirconium in the fuel to take advantage of greater high-temperature strength of such fuel for possibly higher burnup with only slight adverse effect on neutronic performance. The fuel-cycle results for a combined processing-fabrication plant located for simple shipment of low-decontamination fuel to three power plants, each of 1000-MW(e) capacity, are: an electric energy cost of somewhat under one mill per kW-hr; and a geometric doubling time for fissile plutonium of 7.6 years.
