On estime qu'en France l'autisme touche entre 90 000 et 100 000 sujets et la schizophrénie environ 600 000. Ces deux pathologies sont un véritable problème de Santé Publique touchant les enfants, les adolescents et les adultes. Depuis peu, une approche développée à partir du 18ème siècle se médiatise : la médiation animale. En effet, dans le but d'améliorer la qualité de vie des patients, des chercheurs se sont intéressés aux bienfaits de la présence de l'animal chez les enfants atteints d'autisme ou de schizophrénie. La médiation animale consiste en une approche innovante de relation d'aide favorisant les liens bienfaisants et naturels, entre les humains et les animaux, et s'applique à toutes les activités impliquant l'utilisation d'un animal auprès de personnes à des fins préventives, thérapeutiques ou récréatives. Les animaux sont employés comme stimulateurs pour déclencher une réaction afin d'entrer en relation avec la personne. L'animal n'est pas un thérapeute, il contribue au mieux-être de la personne dans le cadre d'une prise en charge pluridisciplinaire. Malgré le manque d'uniformité dans la pratique en partie due à l'absence de diplôme reconnu et le nombre restreint d'études sur le sujet, cette thèse a pour but d'établir le bilan des connaissances actuelles dans ce domaine et pourra servir de base à de futurs travaux.
