Book Description
Artificial circulation and hypolimnetic aeration are management techniques for oxygenating eutrophic lakes subject to water quality problems, algal blooms, and fishkills. Artificial circulation is achieved by injecting diffused air into lower waters, by mechanical pumping of water from one depth stratum to another, or by inducing turbulence at the surface using large axial-flow pumps. In contrast, hypolimnetic aeration by air or oxygen injection affects primarily bottom waters. In some instances low dissolved oxygen concentrations persist in the metalimnion. In general, both methods lower the concentrations of reduced compounds in lake waters, providing benefits for water supply systems. Aeration may cause supersaturation of nitrogen gas, thereby raising the potential danger of gas bubble disease in downstream fishes.

Book Description
Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. Areas for further research and development are also highlighted. This book is comprised of 16 chapters organized into four sections. After an introduction to the theory of the problem and the restoration technique, the discussion turns to the various restoration methods such as those used for physical and chemical control of nutrients. Diversion and advanced waste treatment, hypolimnetic withdrawal, and dilution and flushing are considered along with phosphorus precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. Case studies and success stories are presented and the costs and potential negative impacts of the methods are examined. The following chapters focus on methods to control plant biomass, including artificial circulation, water-level drawdown, harvesting, biological control, and surface and sediment covers. A chapter on liming acidified lakes concludes this text. This monograph will be useful to professional limnologists and engineers, on-site lake or reservoir managers, and those who are interested in learning about the problems and management of lakes and reservoirs.

Book Description
In the late 1970s. the adverse effects of man-made eutrophication became manifest in many countries. which explains. perhaps. why there was such a broad interest when the former Resources and Environment Area of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) organized a workshop on the subject. There was such an enthusiasm among the partici pants that two further workshops were quickly organized. one on deep and the other on shallow lake eutrophication problems. The organization of these meetings was extremely stimulating. and the round table discussions among scientists from both West and East remain thought provoking for those who took part. The general feeling emerged that the complexity and multifaceted nature of the problem, even though perhaps not fully recognized at that time. clearly demanded a systems analysis approach. No wonder. then. that the request made by the Hungarian Member Organization of nASA to adopt Lake Balaton as a "real life laboratory" for an nASA case study fell on fertile ground. the more so since it appeared that shallow lake eutrophication had received less attention and was less well understood than that of deep lakes. And so the nASA Lake Balaton Case Study began. with the appointment of Gerrit van Straten as the first leader of the project.

This book is an essential knowledge base for both ecological restoration and management. Although tropical lakes are not identical, and therefore require individually developed and restoration and management practices; there are general principles in both restoration and management that can be derived from the case histories in this book and the li
