Book Description
Bone and soft tissue sarcomas represent only about 2% of all malignancies; however, their treatment – with the goal of curing the patient while preserving the functionality of the affected body part – can, unlike other malignancies, only be successful with therapy concepts devised by interdisciplinary teams. This volume provides an extensive up-to-date overview of the specific diagnostics and current treatment standards of these rare entities, presenting the various limb-sparing modalities for patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas with special regard to innovative reconstructive options. The evaluation of quality of life based on validated scores and the individual methods of coping with the illness through creative artistic projects are also acknowledged and integrated in the whole concept.

Book Description
This book reviews the brilliant progress made in the past three decades in clinical outcomes for osteosarcoma patients treated with a multidisciplinary approach, including limb-salvage surgery combined with neoadjuvant multidrug chemotherapy and aggressive management of pulmonary metastasis. Osteosarcoma was a miserable disease for adolescents and young adults until the early 1970s, with a survival rate that was less than 10–15% even after amputation for affected limbs because of the progression of pulmonary metastasis. With the development of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for osteosarcoma, including high-dose methotrexate, doxorubicin, cisplatin, and ifosfamide during the late 1970s and the 1980s, however, the prognosis has dramatically improved. Limb-salvage surgery for patients with extremity osteosarcoma is now a gold-standard surgical procedure for more than 90% of patients with localized disease. Additionally, aggressive pulmonary metastasectomy for patients with lung metastasis from osteosarcoma has contributed to improvement of their survival. More recently, carbon-ion radiotherapy has also been introduced for patients with unresectable osteosarcoma of the trunk, as in the spine and pelvis. In this volume the author provides valuable descriptions of an important new treatment modality for a multidisciplinary approach for osteosarcoma patients.

Book Description
This atlas presents a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases. It covers the fundamentals of orthopedic oncology complemented with relevant aspects that are demonstrated using individual cases. In a specialty that deals with a relatively smaller number of cases compared to tumors of other systems, this atlas prepares readers for clinical practice by combining a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, which lies on the continuum between structured and guided learning, with theory and practical insights. The book is divided into sections, arranged according to anatomical regions and the reconstruction type. Each section focuses on a specific anatomical region, and each case presentation includes the basic clinical history, basic principles, preoperative, perioperative and radiographic images, a pitfall list, treatment strategy, technical pearls, outcomes and complications. For each region the authors discuss both the biological and non-biological reconstruction techniques. The book is designed to actively involve the reader, making it an invaluable tool for all orthopedic surgeons confronted with oncologic surgery. The book is intended for trainees in orthopedics, orthopedic oncology fellows as well as practicing consultants.

Book Description
Published in association with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), the newly updated edition of Rich’s Vascular Trauma draws on civilian and military authorities from around the world to offer comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the management of vascular injury. Anatomic patterns of vascular trauma including extremity, torso and cervical injury are reviewed in detail, including the latest techniques to manage non-compressible torso hemorrhage. You’ll have access to all of the current innovations across the broad spectrum of vascular trauma, presented in a well-organized fashion that allows you to quickly hone-in on the most important issues in patient care and management. Emphasizes the current management of civilian vascular injuries with an historical reflection of pioneering contributions from the battlefield. Combines the largest existing database of military vascular trauma with the experience of one of the nation's premier civilian trauma centers. Examines operative techniques and "damage control" for vascular traumas. For the first time, includes a novel International Perspectives section featuring fascinating accounts of vascular trauma from nine leading surgeons from five continents. This section focuses on innovative surgical treatments tailored to locally developed pathways of care, training solutions, and regional injury patterns. End-to-end coverage of all phases of acute vascular injury care, including a new assessment of the implications of vascular trauma in the pre-hospital setting (i.e. point of injury and en-route care). Covers the emerging hot topics, including endovascular procedures to manage trauma, contemporary use of vascular shunts, and a modern reappraisal of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta for shock. An innovative chapter on the systems approach and quality improvement in vascular trauma, offering information and tactics for all providers wishing to understand how clinical systems underpin patient outcome and recovery from this challenging injury pattern. A combined civilian and military authorship from internationally recognized authorities draws on the best available evidence, experience, and lessons-learned from Afghanistan, Iraq, and the "urban battlefield." Expert Consult eBook version included with purchase. This enhanced eBook experience allows you to search all of the text, figures, references, and videos from the book on a variety of devices.

This text provides a comprehensive overview of orthopaedic oncology – the field of orthopaedic surgery that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors of the musculoskeletal system. The opening chapters cover musculoskeletal imaging interpretation and the principles of musculoskeletal biopsy. Assessment and treatment of the full range of tumors are then described in a series of well-illustrated chapters. Detailed consideration is given to benign tumors, osteosarcomas, Ewing sarcomas, chondrosarcomas, metastatic bone disease of the axial and appendicular skeleton, and soft tissue sarcomas. This book will be invaluable for both orthopaedic surgeons and medical oncologists, providing a framework for understanding the fundamentals of these tumors and a sound basis for their treatment.

Book Description
Introduction of new diagnostic methods including various imaging techniques in the field of orthopaedic surgery has enabled us to make early and precise diagnoses of musculoskeletal tumors. In addition, recent progress in the chemotherapy and radiotherapy of malignant tumors has raised the five-year survival rate remarkably, although complete recovery from these treatments alone cannot be expected as yet. These medical advances naturally stimulate the search for ways of limb salvage even in malignant musculoskeletal oncology. To this pur pose, not only oncologists, but orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, engineers, and biomaterials scientists should work together to design suitable surgical procedures and prostheses using autograft, allograft and biomaterials. The First International Workshop on the Design and Application of Tumor Prostheses for Bone and Joint Reconstruction was held in 1981 in Rochester, Minnesota. Participants were of an interdisciplinary nature in order to establish a basis for cooperative efforts, which have subsequently spread throughout the world. Since then, biennial inter national symposia have been held successively in Vienna, Florida, and Kyoto. Previous gatherings of this prestigious series were open only to a small number of experts.

Book Description
This book reflects the experience of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute during more than 100 years of treatment of musculoskeletal tumor and tumorlike lesions. It presents a wide range of lesions from a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting pertinent clinical, radiological, and histological correlations. Treatment is briefly reported for each entity. In addition, the more recent biomolecular findings of use for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are carefully analyzed. The Rizzoli case archive spans more than a century, the first treated case dating back to 28 September 1900, and contains the original material – clinical charts, imaging, paraffin blocks, and histological slides – of more than 40,000 cases, including about 29,000 bone lesions and 11,000 soft tissue lesions. This book reports the most relevant entities and reflects the improvements in knowledge of musculoskeletal tumors as presented during the yearly international course held at the Rizzoli Institute.
