Book Description
Even as Mario Testino has become a royal image-maker in England and in Hollywood, where his portraits define the new glamour for a generation of stars, models and celebrities, he has cherished visions of the elegance and endless beaches of Lima, the city where he grew up. He has always confessed his love: "I'm very proud of being Peruvian, I would not want to be from anywhere else. I've lived in Europe for 30 years, but the moment I see our flag I get soppy." And he confesses it again here, though not in a traditional book of his own photography. For in Lima, Peru Testino make his first foray into the role of photo editor, celebrating the title city through the eyes of its artists, photographers, artisans and photojournalists. Of this project's genesis Testino says, "I wanted to capture Lima's positive chaos...I wanted to find a book which conveyed this--the way Lima's artists and photographers have captured their city's color and complexity, its art, its people and its buildings, its street life and its interiors. But no such book existed, and so I decided to edit one myself." In Lima, Peru, Testino sets sweeping views of the city's architecture opposite details of its ceramic tiles. He collects observations of the city's natural exhibitionists as well as those who would normally shy away from the camera. He showcases art, parades, religion, sex, football, market life, architecture, interiors, high society, the bourgeoisie, teenagers, soldiers, surfers, priests, bullfighters, brides, hostesses, street sellers, waiters, artists, dancers, musicians and sun-worshippers. This is a shimmering, kaleidoscopic view of the city--a considered, eclectic and detailed composite from a master portraitist.

Configuring the New Lima Art Scene
Author: Giuliana Borea
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000182711
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 206
Book Description
This book examines the contemporary art world in Latin America from an anthropological perspective and recognises the recent reconfiguration of Lima's art scene. Giuliana Borea traces the practices of artists, curators, collectors, art dealers and museums, identifying three key moments in this reconfiguration of contemporary art in Lima: artistic explorations and new curatorial narratives; museum reinforcement and the strengthening of Latin American art networks; and of the rise of the art market. In so doing, Borea highlights the different actors that come into play in activating and de-activating directions and imaginations. The book exposes the practices of the local, the global, indigeneity and politics in the arts, and reveals that the strengthening of the Lima art scene has fostered the expansion of dominant art views and formats mobilised by transnational elite actors. Featuring analytical chapters interspersed with personal stories, Borea's book presents an in-depth analysis of a specific art scene to open up a new way of understanding contemporary art practices in relation to globalisation, neoliberalism and the city.

Lima has always dominated national life, as the centre of political and economic power. Long a stronghold of the European elite, the city is now home to millions of Peruvians from the Andean region as well as the descendants of African slaves and migrants from Europe, China and Japan. As a popular saying puts it, the whole of Peru is now in Lima. James Higgins explores the city's history and evolving identity as reflected in its architecture, literature, painting and music. Tracing its trajectory from colonial enclave to modern metropolis, he reveals how the capital now embodies the diversity and dynamism of Peru itself.

Mario Testino
Author: Mario Testino
Publisher: Fundacion Coleccion Thyssen-Bornemisza
ISBN: 9788496233980
Category : Fashion photography
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
This exhibition brings together fifty-four photographs by Mario Testino which reveal two opposing directions in his work: fashion and the nude. These subjects are to be discovered both in his well-known published oeuvre as a fashion photographer as well as in his personal work, and the show includes a number of photographs specially taken for this exhibition and seen here for the first time. For Mario Testino, the heart of Todo o Nada lies in contemplating the process and implications involved in the act of removing one's clothes and becoming naked. As he says, 'The pictures start fully clothed and end naked. But where does fashion photography end and portraiture begin?' To this end, the exhibition includes photographs in which the models wear elaborate dresses, in sets specifically created for each picture and characterised by a deliberate theatricality, contrasted with others in which they are seen starkly unclothed, referring to iconic Plates of Spanish art such as Goya's Majas. The exhibition also reveals many dimensions of the relationship between the photographer and his models. From the glamour of the most famously beautiful women in the world, nude, or wearing haute couture (often photographed with a touch of irony and a provocative sense of humour), to more intimate, oblique and spontaneous moments, Todo o Nada is an ode to 'Testino's woman'. He has defined and redefined his way of seeing a woman over the course of his career. She is a woman who moves between totally opposing poles: 'I like strong, independent women. Women who, despite their strength, never lose their femininity and who do not use their beauty as a tool. Women with personality who can reflect their own desires and ours.' Within the concept of the show, Testino's intention has been to establish a dialogue with the Museum's collection. In his words: 'Exhibiting in a museum such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza with its extraordinary collection is a privilege for any artist working today, particularly given that many of the artists and Plates in the collection have influenced my own work and inspired me. The Museum is remarkable, not just for the collection that it houses, but also for the space, which enhances the work of any artist.'

The Autobiography of Maria Elena Moyano
Author: Patricia Taylor Edmisten
Publisher: Orange Grove Texts Plus
ISBN: 9781616101398
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
"Moyano's life exemplifies the overwhelming obstacles that poor barrio women experience not only in Peru but also in other third world countries. This autobiographical book adds important information to several different disciplines: Latin American politics, feminism, sociology, and current Peruvian history. . . . Edmisten's expertise is obvious in the scholarly introduction and readable translation."--Mary H. Wilgus, Campbellsville University Using María Elena Moyano's own words, the editor of this poignant story has re-created the voice of the martyred Peruvian activist. In 1992, at age 33, Moyano was assassinated by guerrillas of the revolutionary movement Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). Her murder--a warning to others in the women's movement--galvanized the Peruvian people against Sendero Luminoso and its leader, Abimael Guzmán Reynosa. In part 1 of this work, Moyano traces the struggle of poor women in Peru and how they developed survival organizations such as the Vaso de Leche (Glass of Milk) and the communal kitchen feeding program to cope with poverty made worse by government austerity adjustments. Like other women, Moyano honed her leadership skills in these programs. She condemned the terrorist tactics of Sendero Luminoso and publicly proclaimed that they were not on the side of the poor. She also condemned the human rights abuses of the military and police. In part 2, Moyano relates the hardships of her impoverished childhood and describes the difficulties of achieving an education. She speaks also of her marriage and of childbirth, of the discrimination she faced, and of her gradual and steady rise to positions of authority within the popular women's movement and as deputy mayor and spokesperson for the 300,000 people of Villa El Salvador, a Lima barrio. As a woman of color, Moyano led a revolution of conscience within a larger revolution. Through this gracefully translated book, her voice continues to speak for all women who refuse to relinquish the struggle for dignity, freedom, and equal political participation. All royalties from this book will go to the Flora Tristán Center for the Peruvian Woman. Diana Miloslavish Tupac studied literature at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. She went to Mexico to participate in a study on ethnic minorities and human rights, and there she became a member of the Mexican Solidarity Committee for Guatemalan refugees. Upon her return to Peru, she rejoined the Flora Tristán Center for the Peruvian Woman. Patricia S. Taylor Edmisten is an independent scholar and retired professor of the sociological foundations of education at the University of West Florida. She has worked in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer and as a consultant for the United Nations and is the author of Nicaragua Divided: La Prensa and the Chamorro Legacy (UPF, 1990).
