Book Description
Excerpt from Life in Prairie Land The following work was commenced with the intention of writing one or two brief sketches descriptive of Life at the West. And until some hundred and fifty pages were written, I never contemplated the possibility of extending them to a volume. At that point, I was so far from having said all I felt, that Ivery willingly re signed myself to the current of my feelings and wrote on. To those who read the volume first, and after ward, in some idle moment, turn back to the preface, I need not say that I have been impelled in every step by love of my theme. That will have been apparent enough to them, without any such declaration. I have loved the West, and it still claims my preference over all other portions of the earth. Its magnitude, its fertili ty, the kindliness of its climate, the variety and excellence of its productions are unrivaled in our own country, if not on the globe. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pet of the Settlement: A Story of Prairie-Land The incidents upon which the following story is founded, were related to me several years ago by an aged pioneer, with the request that I would embody them in a narrative. City-born and city-bred, I did not then feel equal to the attempt. But four years of actual pioneer life in the valley of the Upper Des Moines, of emigrant life in a cabin on the prairie, have, I think, given me experience enough in West ern scenery and Western character, to delineate, with at least tolerable accuracy and fidelity, the events which form the various chapters of my story. Many of the minor incidents are truthful transcripts from my own pioneer joys and sorrows, while the scenery is the same that gladdens mv eyes every time I look from my cabin window. Book Description
Combining descriptive travel writing, autobiography, and the depth of the extended essay, Life in Prairie Land--back in print in this new edition--is a classic account of everyday life in early Illinois. Eliza Farnham, a New Yorker who would become one of the leading feminists of her time, describes the nearly five years she spent living in the prairie land of Tazewell County. Life in Prairie Land is a complex portrait of the midwestern wilderness during the 1830s--beautiful and ugly, beneficent and threatening. Farnham's vivid recreation of her experiences on the Illinois frontier offers a realistic depiction of the harsh pioneer lifestyle as well as a romantic view of an Edenic landscape. Life in Prairie Land includes descriptions of Farnham's encounters with early settlers and Native Americans, her eye-opening experiences with birth and death, the flora and fauna that surrounded her, and the developing towns she passed through in her travels. Farnham's years on the Illinois frontier showed her the possibilities of a less restrictive society and planted the seeds that would later grow into firmly held and eloquently expressed views on women's equality.
