Aloes are a large genus of plants, about 450 species, from sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and parts of Arabia. A few species have been widely adopted as medicinal plants since ancient times while many of the others, often of limited distribution, are used locally in folk medicine. The Simple Life (1981) was Fiona MacCarthy's first book, written while she was the Guardian's design correspondent (and before her acclaimed lives of Eric Gill, William Morris, and Edward Burne-Jones.)
