Book Description
The English Lakes is a lovely exploration of the English Lake District and includes 75 delightful paintings by A. Heaton Cooper. The English Lakes focuses on the nature of the lakes and the natural phenomena that surround them. The result is a travelogue that helps the reader experience what it is like to travel down the lakes on various watercraft, as well as journey throughout the region by foot. The Lake District is most closely associated with the Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, De Quincey, Southey and others. Palmer travels through the major waterways, stopping at hotels, villages and cottages and relating stories about the poets, particularly Wordsworth. In one memorable chapter, Palmer stays in a cottage on Rothay, recreating the life of William Wordsworth. He explores Rydal and Grasmere, where some of Wordsworth's most famous poems were written, including "The Prelude." The English Lake also discusses local legends like the Hermit of Derwentwater on St. Herberts Island. The island was named after St. Herbert, who was a disciple of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. He chose the remote location so that nothing could distract him from constant prayer. St. Herbert died on the same day as St. Cuthbert and it was then that St. Herbert's Island became a place of pilgrimage. The English Lake feels like a conversation between the reader, Palmer and the lakes themselves. One could can use the book as a travel companion or just use it to learn more about the history, geography and poetry of the Lake District. Excerpt from Complete Guide to the English Lakes It is now some months since I committed the manuscript of this Lake Guide to the Publisher's hands; and now that the work is just ready to appear, I am thankful to him for the opportunity of saying, in this prefatory page, with what pride and pleasure I have looked over the accessories and embellishments with which, by his zeal and spirit, and by the admirable co-operation he has been so fortunate as to secure, my humble work is elevated to a quality of real importance. Book Description
Excerpt from The English Lake District Fisheries MV apology for offering this work to the public is that the Editors of the Angler's Library have kindly asked me to write it; and because all my life I have been specially interested in the F isheries of the Lake District. This magnificent system of lakes, tarns, and rivers, now constitute fisheries mainly in a potential sense only; for there is not the slightest comparison between the sport or food supply they yield to-day with what they might and will - yield in the not distant future. A few years ago fish-culture and the management of fisheries were in their infancy but of late the knowledge of the subject has made enormous strides. Once the results of systematic te-stocking are seen, the cul tivation of water will be looked upon far differently to what it is to-day. There is probably no like area in the whole of Great Britain which has so many natural advantages in this respect as the English Lake District, but as yet these advantages have been but little realised. Book Description
Excerpt from A Descriptive Guide to the English Lakes and Adjacent Mountains: With Notices of the Botany, Mineralogy, and Geology of the District Guides and Tours to the Lakes have been and continue to be offered to the Public in various forms and sizes; but they are chiefly devoted to a single object - the picturesque appearance of the Country; to the exclusion of other important considerations. It is admitted, that the gratification of the eye is a leading motive with many of those who make the Tour of the Lakes; but it is not so with all. The reflecting mind will feel more satisfaction in having gained some knowledge of the structure, the natural history, and productions of the region he has visited. As a resident among the objects he attempts to describe, the Author of this Manual has possessed many opportunities of making observations, which will escape the notice of the transient visiter - the compiler from the works of others - or even of one who undertakes a tour for the professed purpose of making a book. Availing himself of these advantages, and a little experience in surveying, he constructed a Map of the District, divested of many errors which had been copied into former maps, and containing some particulars not to be found in any other. This Map has been accompanied with such descriptions, directions, and remarks, as were judged likely to be serviceable to the future Tourist; in conducting him through the most eligible paths for viewing the varied scenery, and at the same time conveying some information on the structure and phenomena of these interesting regions.
