Much of Francophone literature is a response to an elaborate discourse that served to bolster colonial French notions of national grandeur and to justify expansion of French territories overseas. A form of colonial exoticism saw the colonized subject as a physical, cultural, aesthetic and even sexual singularity. Construction of identity has constituted a vigorous source of debate in the Caribbean from the early days of colonization to the present, and under the varying guises of independence, departmentalization, dictatorship, overseas collectivity and occupation. Given the strictures and structures of colonialism long imposed upon the colonized subject, the (re)makings of identity have proven anything but evident when it comes to determining authentic expressions and perceptions of the postcolonial self. By way of close readings of both constructions in literature and the construction of literature, Architextual Authenticity: Constructing Literature and Literary Identity in the French Caribbean proposes an original, informative frame of reference for understanding the long and ever-evolving struggle for social, cultural, historical and political autonomy in the region. Taking as its point of focus diverse canonical and lesser-known texts from Guadeloupe, Martinique and Haiti published between 1958 and 2013, this book examines the trope of the house (architecture) and the meta-textual construction of texts (architexture) as a means of conceptualizing and articulating how authentic means of expression are and have been created in French-Caribbean literature over the greater part of the past half-century - whether it be in the context of the years leading up to or following the departmentalization of France's overseas colonies in the 1940's, the wrath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, or the devastating Haiti earthquake of 2010.

Guadeloupe (as well as Martinique, Guyane, and Réunion) is one of the former colonies of France that chose to remain tied to the mother country rather than seek independence following World War II. Through the 1946 law of political assimilation, these territories became départements d'outre-mer. Departmentalization, however, failed to bring about full social and economic equality. As political integration increased economic and commercial dependency on the metropole, the pressure of homogenization to the French model precipitated the loss of cultural autonomy. In the 1960s, an anticolonialist movement pushing for a change in political status appeared in Guadeoupe. The nationalist movement was rejuvenated in the 1970s by the selection of the Creole language as a symbol of political and cultural resistance to assimilation, conduit and container of an alternate ideology, and emblem of Guadeloupean identity and island specificity. With this resurgence of interest in kréyòl, a proliferation of associations, groups, and individuals became actively engaged in research and efforts to standardize and develop the language and to popularize its use in new public domains. This case study of the mouvement créole in Guadeloupe analyzes three key sites of conflict - the school, the media, and the political process - in relation to the local, regional, and national levels that structure these arenas. While the monograph is important in illuminating a new concept of identity for the region, the work singles out key differences between the Creole movement in Guadeloupe and its counterpoint, créolité, in Martinique. Both succeeded the earlier formulations of difference in the French Antilles - négritude and antillanité. The study is especially relevant in light of the current and very polemical debate concerning the introduction of an exam for Creole (the CAPES créole) in 2001 for secondary school teachers in France and in the four overseas departments. This educational directive was a response to the demand that Creole receive equal status with the other regional languages (e.g. Occitan, Breton, Basque) in France.

En Afrique de l'Ouest, une série de facteurs contribue à la baisse de la productivité agricole : la dégradation de l'environnement, la forte croissance démographique, les attaques acridiennes, la performance insuffisante des économies. De nombreux pays enregistrent d'énormes déficits alimentaires. Une telle situation ne peut être améliorée qu'à partir de l'adoption de nouvelles technologies visant à l'obtention de meilleurs rendements. Dans cet ouvrage organisé en quatre chapitres, les auteurs se penchent sur les déterminants d'une meilleure productivité agricole. L'accent est surtout mis sur les aléas climatiques de ces dernières décennies, marquées par de fortes irrégularités saisonnières et une baisse régulière de la pluviométrie. Aux aléas climatiques s'ajoute le problème de la fertilité des sols caractérisé le plus souvent par un faible taux de matières organiques : carence en phosphore et en azote, complexe absorbant insuffisant, petite capacité de rétention en eau, etc. Enfin, dans les régions à forte densité de population ( exemples du Ghana et du Togo ), le taux de croissance démographique élevé agit négativement sur le potentiel foncier, caractérisé par la dégradation des ressources naturelles. Les auteurs exposent ici les réalités de ces facteurs déterminants pour la sécurité alimentaire, afin de permettre aux décideurs de mieux les intégrer à leur politique de développement du secteur agricole.
