Excerpt from Letters on the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper Letter I. Obstacles to making an open profession of Christianity, by participating of the Lord's Supper - Scruples on this subject ostensibly not groundless. - The apostle Peter's sentiments respecting some passages in St. Paul's Epistles. - The necessity of enquiry and illustration. Letter II. The solemnity of this ordinance - held in the highest reverence by the great body of professing Christians. Its importance in the estimation of primitive believers. Although not essential to salvation, yet great guilt may be incurred by the neglect of it, under special circumstances. Archbishop Newcombe's opinion on moral obligation. Letter III. Whether the will of God in regard to this ordinance is clearly announced. The first institution of the Lord's Supper as recorded by three Evangelists, and the apostle Paul. This ordinance intended to be a perpetual memorial of our Lord's death. This doctrine maintained by almost every denomination of Christi ms, since the first age of the Church. Letter IV. The origin of this ordinance, divine. Our Lord's injunction respecting it. imperative. Our obligations to obey him as our Creator, - Supreme Legislator - Redeemer - Preserver - and as our final Judge. Letter V. Other grounds of obligation - the infinite love and condescension of the Saviour - our own happiness. - This subject illustrated by the relations of social life. The opinion of Socrates respecting the appearance of Virtue in a human form. Perfect excellence has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ - how received - the happiness that would result from obeying all his commands and following his example. Letter VI. The circumstances in which this ordinance was instituted. - The Saviour's charge - "Do this in remembrance of me," - The command easy, and deserves universal obedience. Letter VII. Christians in the first age of the Church observed this ordinance with delight. A picture of their mutual attachment, and the manner in which they celebrated the Lord's Supper. Their conduct worthy of imitation. Letter VIII. Objections to receiving this ordinance - want of due preparation - this difficulty removed. - Perfection not attainable in the present state The deceitfulness of the human heart. Excerpt from Letters on the Eucharist: Addressed to a Member of the Church of Rome, Formerly a Preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church Circumstances, which it is not needful here to detail, induced the writer Of the several Letters comprised in this volume, to investigate the claims Of the Church Of Rome to the example Of the early church, in proof Of the antiquity Of her peculiar teachings. As it respects her visible worship, no one Of her dogmas is second in pretentious importance, to that which respects the Eucharist. Numerous as are the differences between the Catholic and Protestant religions, says one of her earnest advocates, we may safely assert, that not one is more frequently discussed, or made the touchstone Of the two sys tems' respective claims, than their doctrine respect ing the Sacrament Of the Blessed Eucharist. And this writer expresses the belief, that more persons are brought to the faith Of his church, by satisfying their minds with the Catholic belief respecting the Sacrament, than by being convinced upon many other subjects. Accordingly, we find the believers of a physical change, advocating it as an essentiality, and the sacrifice Of the Mass, as the distinctive mark of the true Church of, God. Should the dis ensaiou Of this subject, and the presentation made, in these communications, contribute somewhat to the exposure Of error, and the vindication Of the truth, the Object of the writer will be realized. Most Of the testimonies produced from the writ ings of the ancient Christian Fathers, have been copied personally, and a faithful representation Of their meaning is believed to be given, as deduced both from the text itself, and the subject of dis course. In discussing collateral topics, it has been necessary, in a few instances, to refer to passages previously quoted, when such repetition was re quired to prove a relative point. And so much' only Of the original languages of our authors is published, as foot notes, and in the form of an Appendix, as seemed desirable to enable the reader to form a satisfactory judgment Of the propriety and correctness of the use made Of their produc tions. If it be true, as an American Statesman of a former generation has said, that Opinion is the queen Of the world, we shall do well to be always ready to give a reason Of our religious belief, and be prepared to defend it, against the sophistical attacks Of misguided Opposers.
