Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From a Prairie Garden The "Letters from a Prairie Garden," are genuine letters and not fiction. They went through the mail. An explanatory word about their origin may not be amiss. Some years ago a famous artist came to a certain mid-western city on business connected with his profession. He had an acquaintance who lived in the hotel where the writer lived at that time and with whom he talked over the phone. The writer frequently happened to be talking at the same time, and the wires crossing, he heard me laugh repeatedly, and he nicknamed me "the woman who laughs." At length he called up the hotel clerk and asked to be permitted to talk over the wire with "the woman who laughs." The clerk connected my apartment. In this way the "Letters" (which must now tell the rest of the story themselves) originated, and it explains likewise why the subjects discussed are so often pictures and objects of art. They were written to a connoisseur of things beautiful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Book Description
Excerpt from Familiar Letters of Peppermint Perkins To the publlcz - I understand that there is a general impression that I am the author of the following letters, or, if not the author, responsible at least for their prevailing tone of depravity. I ask you, what is a sensitive, but chivalrous, man to do? If I acknowledge them as mine my reputation as a man of good sense is lost. If, on the contrary, I deny all connection with them my sister Peppermint will be in a deuce of a mess. I can only beg for your kind indulgence. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From New York I doubt not but the reprinting of these Letters in this country will be a boon to many. Mrs. Lydia Maria Child was one of those noble band of women whose heroic souls were tried in the fire of the old anti-slavery days. Her Appeal was the principal tract issued by the Abolitionists, and her friends and coadjutors were the heroes and heroines of that day. I had the privilege when in America of visiting her home, accompanied by Mr. And Mrs. Blackwell, of Boston.
