Ceux qui y prennent la parole viennent de tous les horizons: juristes, médecins, théologiens. Leurs témoignages reconstituent l'atmosphère polémique du temps autour des grandes et petites affaires qui passionnèrent une partie de l'opinion. Au fil de leurs récits, comme le montre Robert Mandrou dans sa présentation, le scepticisme à l'égard de l'intervention de Satan dans les affaires humaines progresse. En fait, les documents rassemblés ici révèlent deux mondes profondément différents. Les possédées citadines, en elles-mêmes source de scandale parce qu'elles appartiennent à la bourgeoisie et à la petite noblesse, comme c'est le cas à Loudun, et les sorcières villageoises, dont les bûchers n'émeuvent guère que leurs proches. Ces textes mettent aussi en évidence la volonté du pouvoir politique de ne pas laisser se multiplier les foyers d'infection satanique qui désolaient la plupart des provinces. L'ordonnance de Colbert transformant la sorcellerie en délit d'escroquerie (1682) fut une solution radicale. Comme Malebranche l'écrivait, là où les sorciers ne sont pas poursuivis, il n'y en a pas.
