Chacun reconnaît, aujourd'hui, le poids des mathématiques dans la réussite scolaire. Chacun sait, également, que des élèves tenaces et volontaires, parfois très fortement motivés pour un métier scientifique, ne peuvent trouver leur place dans les sections qui devraient les accueillir. Est-ce là une fatalité ? Faut-il se résigner à cette fonction sélective des mathématiques dans le lycée d'aujourd'hui, où elles occupent une place si centrale ? Sylviane Gasquet ne se résigne pas. Au cours des nombreuses années d'expérience pédagogique qu'elle a menées — en particulier celle du « lycée en quatre ans » — elle a appris que l'on ne peut plus se retrancher derrière la « théorie des dons », ou se débarrasser des élèves en difficulté en affirmant qu'« ils ne travaillent pas assez ». Elle sait que la manière d'enseigner les mathématiques, n'est pas neutre, que l'on peut introduire des difficultés inutiles ou artificielles, et compliquer, sans s'en rendre compte, des procédures simples. Mais elle sait que l'on peut aussi faciliter l'accès aux mathématiques, aider les élèves, les guider, les faire pénétrer dans des domaines de plus en plus complexes. Il n'est pas nécessaire, pour cela, de recourir à de savantes « technologies nouvelles », ou d'organiser des marches forcées à coups de leçons particulières... Mais il n'est pas question, non plus, de renoncer à ce qui fait la spécificité de la discipline mathématique. Il s'agit plutôt de débusquer les obstacles, qui se dressent trop souvent entre l'élève qui veut apprendre, et le professeur qui veut enseigner. Il s'agit de s'attaquer à ce mur de l'incompréhension mathématique, construit en grande partie par l'École elle-même, et dont Sylviane Gasquet montre, à l'aide de nombreux exemples, que l'on ne doit pas désespérer de sa chute, et que chaque enseignant peut, dans sa classe, y contribuer.

This title, first published in 1984, is a case study of crime and criminal justice in rural, southwestern France in the last century of the Old Regime. Based on extensive research in criminal court records, often the only documentary evidence of the poor and illiterate, the study is a valuable addition both to our knowledge of Old Regime society and to our understanding of its judicial institutions. Rural, Old Regime France seethed with violence. Assault, homicide, and a violence of speech occurred frequently at all levels of society. The author’s finding that royal fiscal and judicial officials were recurring targets of this violence additionally contributes to our understanding of the revolutionary events ending the Old Regime. This system, providing in principle for judicial torture and corporal and capital punishments for relatively minor crimes, has long epitomized much that was wrong with pre-revolutionary France. But the law in principle is not the law in practice, and the author finds that both local and appeals courts seldom decreed such measures. This book will be of interest to students of history and criminology.
